The Seat Ateca isn’t just great to drive and attractive to look at, it’s also impressively spacious, well equipped and competitively priced. Put simply, if you’re looking for a family SUV that’s also capable of putting a smile on your face, the Ateca needs to be very high on your shopping list. The Skoda Karoq isn't as specialised when it comes to handling agility but it is a slightly better all-round package.

Entry-level SE trim is such great value for money when you consider how much it offers that it's our pick of the range. It includes cruise control, dual-zone climate control, metallic paint, 17in alloy wheels, keyless entry, wireless phone charging, power-folding door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, four USB-C sockets and an 8.3in touchscreen infotainment system.

The best choice for most buyers. Outright acceleration is more than brisk enough (0-62mph takes 9.3sec), but it's the ease with which you can build speed from low revs in any given gear that really impresses. Fuel economy is decent, too, with up to 45mpg average officially possible.
