This is the entry-level engine and is solely paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. We’ve yet to try it but we suspect it’s punchy enough – unless you plan on fully loading the car regularly.

Citroën is probably most famous for its quirky design, and the latest cars from the brand live up to this tradition. In fact, it&nbsp;tends to keep away from sportiness altogether and instead tries to put comfort first.

Value (but not cheapness) is also key to the appeal of most Citroëns. And the company’s range includes everything from a tiny EV (the Ami) through to the C3 small hatchback and&nbsp;the large van-based&nbsp;Spacetourer MPV.

Its range of SUVs are all badged Aircross, and like the rest of its range place emphasis on comfort, not speed.

We’d stick to Plus, seeing as it comes with a good amount of kit. It gets 17in alloy wheels, cruise control, automatic headlights, electrically folding mirrors and a rear-view camera with rear parking sensors.

This is currently the only battery and electric motor configuration available with the ë-C3 Aircross – a larger battery with more range is on its way. Its 111bhp means the ë-C3 Aircross is slow by electric car standards, plus its range of 188 miles might not suit lots of families.

This hybrid version uses the same 1.2-litre engine that you get in the Turbo 100. However, it gains a small electric motor and an automatic gearbox for better efficiency. It’s our engine of choice.

Max adds some luxuries like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a wireless phone charger. It’s worth a look if you have the budget, but it’s not a must-have trim in our opinion.
