There are more practical plug-in hybrid SUVs out there, so if space is a high priority the Mazda MX-30 R-EV is probably not for you. On the plus side, it drives well and has a smart, well-equipped interior. Thanks to its petrol engine, it’s far more usable every day than the all-electric version, helping to make up for the higher price.

Our favourite trim provides plenty of kit, including an 8.8in infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera.

The only option is a 36kWh battery powering an electric motor, which offers tepid acceleration (0-62mph in 9.7sec) and one of the worst battery ranges of any current EV: 124 miles (WLTP). A range extender – with a small petrol engine that charges up the battery as you go along – will join the line-up soon.
