<p dir="ltr">DS has only existed as a standalone manufacturer since 2015&nbsp;(prior to that the badge was used on upmarket&nbsp;Citroëns), but it is now the premium brand in the Stellantis group, which also includes&nbsp;Citroën, Peugeot and Vauxhall.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The first DS models were essentially rebadged Citroëns, but more recently its cars are now standalone models in their own right. Yet under the skin, they're still very closely related.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Its models are&nbsp;influenced by the French fashion industry and are designed&nbsp;to take on the ubiquitous offerings of Audi, BMW and Mercedes.</p>

Going for Pallas 55 over entry-level Pallas adds tinted rear windows, a different style of 19in wheel, as well as a head-up display, sat-nav and a second touchscreen, but we don’t think it’s worth the price premium.

The DS 4's cushy ride and high-quality interior help it stand out from better known alternatives, such as the Volkswagen T-Roc and Volvo XC40. However, we’d expect more interior and boot space, as well as a better ride and handling balance. If you do buy a DS 4, we’d suggest choosing the entry-level Pallas trim and the mild-hybrid engine.
