Volvo is now a true rival to the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, offering an alternative take on premium executive cars to a rapidly growing fanbase.

After a string of strong launches – notably with the Mk2 XC90 and XC60 SUVs – it struck gold in early 2018 when it launched its smallest SUV, the XC40. When our testers compared the car with its rivals, they concluded that it was the best launch of the previous 12 months, earning it our coveted overall Car of the Year Award.

The good news is that, like many car makers, Volvo now uses the same structure underneath most of its cars – so if they get it right on one model, it usually bodes well for the rest. That’s the case here, with Volvo’s subsequent saloon and estate launches complementing the SUVs and making for a generally extremely appealing line-up.

Audi is a brand that sets the standard for interior quality, and this, combined with its vast and ever-growing model line-up, has helped it become one of the ‘big three’ German prestige car makers, along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The A3 hatchback, A4 executive saloon and Q7 SUV are all common - yet upmarket - sights on UK roads.

At least some of Audi's success over the past 30 years can be attributed to the growth in sales of vehicles with four-wheel drive; the company arguably led the way in bringing 4x4 technology into the mainstream, with its Quattro coupé in the early 1980s.

Today, most Audis are available with at least the option of four-wheel drive, while the list of SUVs from the brand includes the Q2, Q3, Q5 and Q7.

The Audi Q4 e-tron is comfortable, practical and classy, and good value bought used.&nbsp;

Used Audi Q4 e-tron 2021-present

This class is all about SUVs that run purely on electricity. No petrol, no diesel and not even any hybrid technology.

Relatively low-cost options include the MG ZS EV, but you can easily spend three times as much on more luxurious alternatives, such as the BMW iX.&nbsp;

Electric SUV

If you're after an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a> and don't want to spend an absolute fortune on it, but still fancy spoiling yourself with something that's good to drive and comes with a classy interior, a second-hand <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q4/estate/review/n23194">Audi Q4 e-tron</a> could well be the car for you.

You see not only is it supremely competent on the road, but it's also nice to sit in and ride in too. Perhaps that's not so surprising, as under the skin&nbsp;it’s closely related to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/enyaq/estate/review/n22909">Skoda Enyaq</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id4/estate/review/n22789">VW&nbsp;ID 4</a>.

Money-wise, it looks good value, too. A used Q4 e-tron will&nbsp;cost you pretty much the same as a used Enyaq or ID 4, and only a little more than the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc40/estate/review/n22063">Volvo XC40 Recharge</a>. It'll be a good deal less than the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix3/4x4/review/n22236">BMW iX3</a>.

Trims &amp; equipment: All Q4 e-trons are decently equipped. The entry-level Sport&nbsp;gets&nbsp;19in alloy wheels, three-zone climate control, heated front seats and a powered boot lid.

Upgrading to S line brings 20in wheels, privacy glass, sports front seats and ambient interior lighting. Black Edition models add larger 21in wheels, a black exterior styling pack and paddles behind the steering wheel that let you quickly change the level of energy recuperation.

Power: The entry-level Audi Q4 e-tron – the 40 – has 201bhp, rear-wheel drive and an 8.5sec 0-62mph time. That's slightly slower than an equally powerful&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q5/4x4/review/n41">Audi Q5</a>&nbsp;45 TDI diesel, but if anything, the Q4 feels quicker in everyday driving. It surges forwards almost instantaneously when you put your foot down instead of requiring time to rev up or change down a gear.

At the other end of the range, the 50 can hit 62mph in 6.2sec thanks to twin motors, four-wheel drive and 295bhp of poke.

Ride &amp; handling: The Q4 feels supple around town, and is comfortable at higher speeds, too. Sport models on the smallest 19in wheels and comfort suspension are the most comfortable, isolating against bumps the most effectively.

It can roll in hard cornering, but the Q4 grips strongly and its accurate steering gives you confidence. The unnecessarily heavy Dynamic setting doesn’t really add to the experience.

The Q4 can’t match the incredible refinement of the bigger and more expensive&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q8/4x4/review/n18397">Audi Q8 e-tron</a>&nbsp;but it is better at shutting out road noise than key rivals such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/mustang-mach-e/estate/review/n22387">Mustang Mach-E</a> and XC40 Recharge. There’s also very little electric motor whine. Wind noise is minimal unless there’s a heavy crosswind, in which case you hear it gusting around the windscreen pillars.

Interior &amp; practicality:&nbsp;Inside, the climate controls are conventional switches, which are far less distracting to use on the move than the touchscreen icons you get in the&nbsp;Skoda Enyaq&nbsp;and&nbsp;Volvo XC40 Recharge&nbsp;let alone the touch-sensitive panels of the&nbsp;VW ID 4.

A configurable digital instrument panel is standard, while an augmented-reality head-up display (available as part of the Technology Pack Pro) should further reduce the need to look down at the dashboard. It can project images for the lane-departure warning and sat-nav directional arrows showing you where to turn, so they appear to be on the road ahead.

Above the climate controls sits an 11.6in infotainment touchscreen. It's not quite as intuitive as the iDrive system in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix3/4x4/review/n22236">BMW iX3</a>&nbsp;but it’s easier to use than the Enyaq’s and much quicker than the ID.4’s glitchy unit.

You also get a DAB radio, built-in navigation,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194">Android Auto</a>&nbsp;smartphone mirroring, two USB-C ports and a three-year subscription to online services such as Google maps, and weather and hazard alerts. Amazon Alexa is integrated into the system, allowing you to manage calendars, shopping lists and your Amazon smart devices at home, all through voice commands.

The&nbsp;electric SUV&nbsp;class includes some seriously plush and pricey models, including the bigger&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q8/4x4/review/n18397">Audi Q8 e-tron</a>&nbsp;but the Q4 still fares pretty well in terms of interior quality. Despite featuring some hard plastic on the doors, it feels significantly classier than its Enyaq and ID 4 siblings, as well as the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

You’ll have plenty of head and leg room in the front of the Q4 e-tron, even if you’re well over six-feet tall. Rear-seat passengers are very well catered for, with the Q4 offering significantly more knee room than the&nbsp;Volvo XC40 Recharge&nbsp;and more head room than the&nbsp;Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Overall, it’s roomier than both those rivals, and is also a match for the closely related&nbsp;Skoda Enyaq.&nbsp;Even a central rear passenger will be reasonably comfortable because the floor is completely flat.

The Q4 e-tron's boot matches the 520-litre capacity of the conventionally powered&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q5/4x4/review/n41">Audi Q5</a>&nbsp;and we managed to fit seven carry-on suitcases into it. The Q4’s wide aperture and tailgate mean it’ll fit much bulkier items, plus that tailgate is powered on all versions.

Audi Q4 Hatchback

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the M8&nbsp;grand tourer, which costs more than £120,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has ten in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and XM, plus the electric iX3 and iX.

All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

From its driving experience to its interior quality, the BMW iX3 is a class act and a good used buy.&nbsp;

Used BMW iX3 2021-present

The spaceship look – what do you make of it? Many <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUVs</a> embrace it as a means of&nbsp;standing out and emphasising&nbsp;the futuristic nature of the vehicle. It's not for everyone, though, and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix3/4x4/review/n22236">BMW iX3</a> understands this.

We wouldn't blame you for confusing&nbsp;it with the conventionally powered <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x3/4x4/review/n42">BMW X3</a>. They look almost identical, bar some badges and different front grilles. This isn't&nbsp;a coincidence, either. Unlike the imposing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix/4x4/review/n23569">BMW iX</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;quirky <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/i3/hatchback/used-review/n874">BMW i3 2013-2022</a>, the iX3&nbsp;wasn't built from the ground up to be electric – it's just a variant of the X3.&nbsp;

It's only really&nbsp;when you get on the accelerator&nbsp;that it becomes abundantly clear you have electric power moving you along (via&nbsp;the rear wheels). Officially, you can go up to 285 miles on a charge and performance is instantaneous, punchy and unsurprisingly quiet – on the other hand,&nbsp;M Sport Pro cars&nbsp;get an eerie electronic soundtrack dreamed up by German film score composer Hans Zimmer to accompany acceleration (in Sport mode).&nbsp;

Sure, a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a> Performance will eat it for breakfast, but the iX3's&nbsp;0-62mph time of 6.8sec&nbsp;isn't bad at all. What's more, the iX3 is better to drive&nbsp;than the Y,&nbsp;overall.&nbsp;

For a car as heavy and tall as the iX3, it has remarkable&nbsp;agility and composure in the bends, as well as a surprising&nbsp;lack of&nbsp;body lean. The well-weighted steering also aids confidence&nbsp;and the end result is one of the best, most polished&nbsp;driving experiences of any car in its class.&nbsp;

You can adjust the stiffness of the suspension, tightening things up for country road driving or softening them for long motorway jaunts. It’s firmer than the wafty <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q8/4x4/review/n18397">Audi E-Tron</a>, but it deals with bumps more than well enough, both around town and on faster roads. In fact, anyone who suffers from car sickness might prefer the iX3’s well-tied-down feel.

You certainly won't get sick of the iX3's interior.&nbsp;True, it&nbsp;perhaps isn’t quite as glamorous as what you'll find inside the&nbsp;E-tron&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/eqc/4x4/review/n19377">Mercedes EQC</a>, but it feels really well put together and has lots of dense, squishy materials in most of the important places. Only a couple of patches of hard, scratchy plastic – around the starter button, for example – let it&nbsp;down a little.

<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/bmw">BMW</a>&nbsp;is known for leading the pack when it comes to infotainment and the iX3 is another example of that, with the latest version of the brilliant iDrive system. The 10.25in touchscreen display can be operated using a rotary controller between the front seats, which is much less distracting than rival systems. You can also use touch, a series of set gestures or the&nbsp;natural speech voice control function, which works surprisingly well (most of the time).

On top of built-in sat-nav, bluetooth and DAB radio, all versions of the iX3 come with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194">Android Auto</a>&nbsp;smartphone mirroring, and wireless phone-charging, while top-tier M Sport Pro versions also get an upgraded Harman Kardon sound system.

Upon the iX3's 2021 launch, the model was available in&nbsp;Premier Edition and Premier Edition Pro trims. These soon transitioned into (similarly specced) M Sport and M Sport Pro – these two have since become more common on the used market.&nbsp;

Entry-level M Sport gives you plenty of luxuries, including 19in alloy wheels, a powered tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, leather seats (heated in the front), a 12.3in digital driver display and parking sensors.&nbsp;

Range-topping M Sport Pro trim gets you 20in aerodynamic alloys, a head-up display (which projects current speed, the speed limit and sat-nav directions on to the windscreen), auto-dipping headlights and keyless entry. That’s alongside a fancier sound system, lumbar support and IconicSounds acceleration sound effects.&nbsp;

Take a seat in the front of the iX3 and you’ll be treated to plenty of head and leg room, even if you're over six feet tall. The interior is also wide enough that you won’t find your shoulders rubbing those of your passenger.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It’s good news in the rear too, because&nbsp;despite the fact that a big battery has, in effect, been shoehorned under the floor, there’s as much space in the iX3 as in the regular&nbsp;X3. That means two tall people can sit quite comfortably in the back of the car, with leg and head room to spare.

You can recline the outer rear seats to give a more laid-back seating position, a feature that isn’t available in the iX3’s direct rivals.

The main boot area is identical to the X3’s, which means it’s slightly smaller than an E-Tron’s but bigger than the one in the&nbsp;EQC. The iX3 loses a bit of underfloor storage compared with the X3, but there’s still room for the charging cable. All iX3 models have&nbsp;40/20/40 split-folding rear seats.&nbsp;

A powerhouse of luxury, the BMW iX deserves its flagship status. It's great to ride in but still quite pricey.

Used BMW iX 2021-present

Some flagship products enjoy great success, like Apple's&nbsp;Macintosh&nbsp;computer and Heinz Tomato Ketchup, while others become infamous failures – the Titanic perhaps being the most dramatic&nbsp;example of all. What will it be for the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix/4x4/review/n23569">BMW iX</a>, the brand's current top-of-the-line <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a>?

Well, based on&nbsp;the few years since its release, the model has performed well – both in terms of sales figures&nbsp;and critical reception.&nbsp;Now, the used market is enjoying some of that success.&nbsp;

Performance &amp; Range:&nbsp;You'll find the most affordable used iXs are entry-level 40 models: these have a&nbsp;74kWh battery and can officially travel&nbsp;264 miles on a single charge – it'll achieve around 190 miles in the real world, though. They also have four-wheel drive (like all iXs),&nbsp;321bhp and a 0-60mph time of 5.7sec according to our testing. Apart from the slightly disappointing range, these are&nbsp;impressive figures, making the 40 far from a bad start to the range.&nbsp;

Next up is the 50. It has&nbsp;a larger 108kWh battery and a much better real-world range of around 280 miles. What's more,&nbsp;the 50 is&nbsp;quicker than the 40, with its 516bhp launching the iX from 0-60mph in&nbsp;just 4.4sec during our testing.&nbsp;

The M60 sits at the top of the iX tree, yet it has the same 108kWh battery&nbsp;as the 50 and will go a similar distance before running out of juice. Instead, the M60 focuses its attention on performance: it has&nbsp;610bhp on tap and the ability to hurtle to 62mph in 3.8sec. Does it feel&nbsp;significantly faster than the already rapid 50? To be honest, not really.&nbsp;

Ride &amp; Handling:&nbsp;We wouldn't call iX – even the M60 – a driver's car.&nbsp;You’ll feel its top-heavy weight when you turn into a corner at speed and the steering is lighter than in many BMWs.&nbsp;The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q8/4x4/review/n18397">Audi e-Tron</a> is a little tidier in the corners and has meatier steering, but if you want a more nimble electric SUV, the smaller&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix3/4x4/review/n22236">BMW iX3</a>&nbsp;and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/jaguar/i-pace/estate/review/n122">Jaguar I-Pace</a> are better bets.

The iX does compare well with some fossil-fuelled <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/luxury-suvs/n17036">luxury SUVs</a>, though. Its relatively low centre of gravity makes it far more composed in bends than the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/g-class/4x4/review/n180">Mercedes G-Class</a> and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/land-rover/range-rover/4x4/review/n17353">Range Rover</a>, for instance.&nbsp;

As for comfort, the iX performs brilliantly against rivals,&nbsp;especially in 50 and range-topping M60 form. These versions get air suspension, which helps it deal with lumps and bumps on the road better than the I-Pace and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/eqc/4x4/review/n19377">Mercedes EQC</a>.&nbsp;

Interior &amp; Practicality:&nbsp;There’s no mistaking the iX's for anything other than that of a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/luxury-cars/n17020">luxury car</a>.&nbsp;Upmarket materials have been used throughout, including sustainably sourced wood, microfibre fabrics and pleasingly robust-feeling recycled plastics.

As you might expect from such a giant vehicle, interior space is vast, both in the front and back –&nbsp;you can't get the iX with seven seats, though.&nbsp;Boot space is rather disappointing at 500 litres below the parcel shelf. The rakish tailgate reduces the effective length of the load bay and doesn’t open as high as we'd like. If you're tall, you'll need to duck to access the boot when the car is backed up against a kerb.&nbsp;

The boot floor is at least a useful square shape and we managed to fit a respectable eight carry-on suitcases below the tonneau cover – one more than we could squeeze in the I-Pace and the same tally as the EQC.

Trims &amp; Equipment:&nbsp;Furthering the iX's sense of luxury is its rich equipment levels.&nbsp;You can get Sport and M Sport versions of the iX, with the former trim etting plenty of luxuries, including 21in aerodynamic alloys, heated front seats, a heat pump, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, four-zone climate control, wireless phone-charging, a leather-look upholstery called SensaTec and the 14.9in infotainment display.

Go for M Sport and you'll enjoy sportier-looking bumpers and 21in wheels, bronze exterior highlights and blue seatbelts.&nbsp;The M60 is somewhat of&nbsp;a trim in its own right, getting&nbsp;larger 22in aero wheels, M Sport brakes with blue calipers, and ventilated front seats with a massage function.

The iX is fitted with the latest (and greatest) iDrive infotainment system. It combines a huge curved display featuring a 14.9in infotainment touchscreen right next to a 12.3in digital instrument panel behind the steering wheel. The system has logically laid out menus, pin-sharp graphics and lightning-quick responses, plus the added convenience of wireless&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a>&nbsp;so you can run your phone apps through the screen.

Citroën is probably most famous for its quirky design, and the latest cars from the brand live up to this tradition. In fact, it&nbsp;tends to keep away from sportiness altogether and instead tries to put comfort first.

Value (but not cheapness) is also key to the appeal of most Citroëns. And the company’s range includes everything from a tiny EV (the Ami) through to the C3 small hatchback and&nbsp;the large van-based&nbsp;Spacetourer MPV.

Its range of SUVs are all badged Aircross, and like the rest of its range place emphasis on comfort, not speed.

CITROEN

The Citroën e-C4 is a comfortable electric SUV&nbsp;that’s good value on the used market. However, it isn’t the most practical&nbsp;offering

Used Citroën e-C4 2020-present

The French are famous for doing things differently and that’s no exception with their cars. Take the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/citroen/c4/hatchback/review/n22375">Citroën e-C4</a> as an example. It’s the same length as a family hatchback, but it has pumped-up wheel arches, a raised ride height and a coupé-style roofline that give it a very distinctive look. It also focuses on ride comfort, which is great considering that most <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/family-suvs/n17116">family SUVs</a> are designed to eat up the miles – especially on the motorway.&nbsp;

In this instance, we’re focusing on the fully electric e-C4 and e-C4 X. They’re based on the same underpinnings as the regular <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/citroen/c4/hatchback/review/n22373">Citroën C4</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/citroen/c4-x/saloon/review/n26686">C4 X</a>, which can be had with petrol or diesel engines. The main difference between the two is the boot, because the e-C4 X has a saloon-style opening as opposed to a hatchback opening. It also offers slightly more luggage space.&nbsp;

Engines: Most Citroën e-C4s are powered by a 134bhp electric motor and a battery with a total capacity of 50kWh. That's a little bit smaller than the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id3/hatchback/review/n21832#in-the-cabin">VW ID 3</a> Pro Performance with its 58kWh battery, and the ë-C4’s official range is subsequently less than that car’s. It can manage 219 to 222 miles depending on the trim, as opposed to 265 miles with the ID 3.

Citroën added a larger 54Wh battery later in the e-C4’s life, which lifted the official range to 260 miles. It also gained a more powerful 154bhp electric motor, which lowers the 0-62mph from 10.0sec to 9.2sec.&nbsp;

The e-C4’s motor and battery options are similar to other cars from the Stellantis stable, including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/2008/estate/review/n20552">Peugeot e-2008</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/vauxhall/mokka/hatchback/review/n22633">Vauxhall Mokka Electric</a> (they all share the same underpinnings).

Ride and handling: The e-C4’s suspension is quite soft, which means it has a calm and cushioning ride that’s ideal for driving on the motorway. It’s great around town too, because the suspension cushions you well over bigger ruts and speed bumps. It’s certainly more comfortable than a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/smart/hashtag-1/hatchback/review/n25016">Smart #1</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mg-motor-uk/zs/hatchback/review/n20171">MG ZS EV</a>.

The payoff for the ride comfort is handling, though. There’s considerable body lean in the corners, with the #1, ID 3 and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/e-niro/estate/used-review/n22663">Kia e-Niro</a> providing more tidy handling when the going gets twisty.

Interior and practicality: The e-C4’s interior isn’t as quirky or distinctive as the exterior, but it is fairly functional. The 10.0in infotainment system (standard on all cars) is positioned high on the dashboard, which means it’s easy to see while driving. It’s also paired with physical climate controls, which are easier to use than the fiddly touch-sensitive sliders you get with the ID 3.

The infotainment system you get depends on the trim. The upper trims get a newer system with a higher resolution display and a quicker touchscreen response, while lower trims get a more basic set-up. Either way, the layout is largely the same, giving you two physical shortcut buttons and a volume dial.&nbsp;

In terms of material quality, the e-C4’s interior is much better than what you’ll get in a Zoe or Leaf. There are some pleasant soft-touch materials on the dashboard and doors, plus the general build quality is decent. It’s not perfect, though; there are quite a few scratchy materials dotted around the place.

The C4’s driving position is comfortable, with plenty of adjustment for the seat and steering wheel. The seats are also nice and supportive; all cars come with adjustable lumbar support as standard.

While the e-C4 isn’t as spacious as the e-Niro or ID 3 in the front seats (the steeply raked windscreen can leave you feeling a little hemmed in), most six-footers should fit easily enough.

In the back seats, two six-foot adults will have plenty of room for their legs and feet, but head room is tight because of the sloping roof (in both the e-C4 and e-C4 X). The e-Niro and ID 3 are better for carrying passengers in the back.

The e-C4’s boot is a reasonable size at 380 litres. We managed to fit five carry-on suitcases beneath the parcel shelf, which is better than a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mazda/mx-30/hatchback/review/n26435">Mazda MX-30</a> and #1. It’s also the same as the ID 3.

The e-C4 X has a much bigger boot than the e-C4, with 510 litres of space. The saloon-style boot opening does make it more difficult than the hatchback for loading larger items in, though.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you want to carry longer items, the e-C4’s seats fold in a 60/40 split. While the e-Niro’s seats fold in a more useful 40/20/40 configuration, upper versions of the e-C4 do get a handy ski hatch for some added flexibility. By comparison, most of the e-C4’s rivals, including the ZS EV and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/kona-electric/hatchback/used-review/n22559">Hyundai Kona Electric</a>, have a 60/40 set-up.

Trims and equipment: Citroën has regularly updated the e-C4’s trim levels, so there are quite a few to choose from (and it can get a bit confusing). On early cars, there were five trims: Sense, Sense Plus, C-Series Edition, Shine and Shine Plus.&nbsp;

Entry-level Sense cars offer a good amount of standard equipment, with 18in alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, rear parking sensors, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, dual-zone climate control and automatic windscreen wipers. Sense Plus adds a few more useful features, such as a reversing camera, a head-up display and electrically folding door mirrors.&nbsp;

C-Series Edition, Shine and Shine Plus don’t add much more kit on-top of Sense Plus, other than a few exterior styling tweaks, different alloy wheel designs, front and lateral parking sensors and heated front seats.

On later cars, the trims were updated to You!, Max and ë-Series. You! comes with the same amount of kit as Sense on early cars, while Max adds heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, extra visibility aids and a higher-quality touchscreen.&nbsp;

Range-topping ë-Series trim adds wireless phone charging, Alcantara upholstery, massaging seats and the option of the bigger battery. This trim was called Plus on later cars, but it still comes with a similar level of standard kit.

Citroën e-C4 Hatchback

Ford builds some of the most popular cars in the UK, including the Fiesta and Focus hatchbacks.

This success is partly down to longevity and the fact that there’s a Ford dealer around every corner. However, it’s also because Fords tend to offer good value and be among the best cars in their respective classes to drive.

The company’s huge range also helps; it offers everything from the small – but surprisingly practical – Ka+ to the large and lavishly equipped Edge SUV.

Meanwhile, other highlights of the range include the S-Max and Galaxy people carriers, the Mondeo executive car and the Ranger pick-up.

MUSTANG MACH-E

With its impressive range, strong performance and good practicality, the Ford Mustang Mach-E looks great on paper.&nbsp;

Used Ford Mustang Mach-E 2020-present

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/mustang-mach-e/estate/review/n22387">Ford Mustang Mach-E</a>&nbsp;is about as closely&nbsp;related to the principal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/mustang/coupe/review/n17149">Ford Mustang</a> as Simon Cowell is to a Teletubby, with one being an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a> and the other a V8-engined <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/coupes/n17019">coupé</a>.

Why do they share a Mustang badge, then? Well, Ford essentially hoped that the sporty appeal and popularity of its iconic pony car would rub off on the Mach-E&nbsp;and result in sales galore.&nbsp;

Time will tell, but so far sales have been good. Critically, the model didn't hit the ground running,&nbsp;though.&nbsp;When the Mach-E first hit the UK, the ride&nbsp;didn't feel properly set up for our roads. It would jostle and buck you around, the car feeling unsettled on anything but silky smooth roads. Fortunately,&nbsp;models from spring 2022 and beyond&nbsp;got a revised suspension that improved&nbsp;ride comfort.

It hasn't become a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/luxury-cars/n17020">luxury car</a>, but the ride is&nbsp;much more composed now. The Mach-E GT model, with its&nbsp;adaptive suspension and&nbsp;lower ride height, feels even&nbsp;more tied down and settled, giving you the confidence to drive&nbsp;swiftly.

As for all Mach-Es,&nbsp;handling is average for the class. It's playful and entertaining at times, although you can find yourself struggling to connect with the quick but inconsistently weighted steering, not to mention&nbsp;there’s not a great sense of grip from the front tyres.

One area where the Mach-E has always impressed, though, is in its electric range and performance. The entry-level&nbsp;Standard Range RWD (rear-wheel drive) has an official range of&nbsp;273 miles and, in our real-world <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/range-test-how-far-can-electric-cars-really-go/n24836">range test</a>, it managed a respectable 211. Its 265bhp motor delivers a 0-62mph time of 6.9 sec&nbsp;– plenty of poke for most situations and almost two seconds faster than the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id4/estate/review/n22789">VW ID 4</a> Pro Performance.&nbsp;

The Extended Range RWD model has 290bhp, but with a bigger battery to haul around, it's fractionally (0.1sec) slower than Standard Range models. Its official range is a remarkable&nbsp;372 miles&nbsp;and, in our range tests, it covered 302 miles in summer weather, and 247 in winter.

The four-wheel-drive version, dubbed the Extended Range AWD, packs 346bhp via its dual electric motors, so acceleration is super brisk. You'll see 0-62mph in 5.8sec.

If performance tops your&nbsp;priorities list, then the Mach-E GT is your best choice. The GT has more powerful electric motors for a combined 480bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.4sec. That's&nbsp;impressive, if not quite as quick as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a> Performance or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n24838">Kia EV6 GT</a>.&nbsp;It has an official range of 310 miles, against 319 for the Model Y Performance.&nbsp;

Inside, the driving position is pretty good, even if the manually adjustable seat that comes with the entry-level trim has a fiddly lever to adjust the backrest angle and no variable lumbar support. It does have height adjustment, though.

The Mach-E driver's seat is comfortable on a long trip but lacks side support through corners (the driving seat of the VW ID 4 is much better). An eight-way electrically adjustable front seat comes with&nbsp;all AWD models, and that includes plenty of lumbar adjustment. The range-topping Mach-E GT models get comfy sports seats.&nbsp;

Some of the plastics and faux-leather trim is a bit too shiny and cheap-looking. To the Mach-E’s credit, its interior features fewer hard plastics than the ID 4 and it’s no worse for fit and finish than the Model Y.

The infotainment software is responsive, with clear graphics and a relatively logical layout. It's not far off the effectiveness of the Model Y's and much better than in the ID 4. The screen also features multiple sections called cards, each displaying a different application, such as the media player or the sat-nav, at the same time.

You get built-in sat-nav,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194">Android Auto</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a>&nbsp;smartphone capability (so you can use your phone apps on the screen) and a wireless phone charger.

All Mach-Es come well equipped, with the entry-level model fitted with heated front seats, a heated windscreen, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, 18in alloy wheels, privacy glass and two-zone climate control.

The Extended Range versions get&nbsp;19in wheels, red brake calipers, ambient lighting, adaptive LED headlights, electric front seat adjustment, and piano-black exterior highlights. The AWD models add a Tech Pack that includes a panoramic sunroof and a hands-free powered tailgate. The performance-focused GT gets a sportier look, 20in wheels and sports seats up front, as well as the aforementioned&nbsp;performance upgrades.

While there’s plenty of head room in the front of the Mach-E, its sloping roofline eats&nbsp;into the height in the rear. The Model Y and the ID 4 both have more rear head room. However, the Mach-E shades both for knee room in the back.

In terms of practicality, the main boot has a useful height-adjustable floor that removes the annoying load lip many rivals have. It has 402 litres of volume, which is big enough to fit seven carry-on cases under the tonneau cover, plus a front boot with another 100 litres of space. It's designed to be hosed out and features a drain plug so it's a good place to store muddy boots.

Rival electric SUVs can manage more luggage, with the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/bz4x/hatchback/review/n24187">Toyota bZ4X</a> taking eight carry-on cases, the ID.4 nine and the Model Y an impressive 10.

GV60

The Genesis GV60 is great value as a used buy, and&nbsp;it offers a smart interior, a&nbsp;comfortable ride and a good&nbsp;range

Used Genesis GV60 2022-present

Choosing the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/genesis/gv60/estate/review/n24373">Genesis GV60</a> is a bit like splashing out on Premium Economy over Economy. That’s because Genesis is the luxury arm of the Hyundai Group, with the GV60 positioned as the premium alternative to the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/ioniq-5/hatchback/review/n22944">Hyundai Ioniq 5</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a>.

Indeed, the GV60 shares its underpinnings with those two cars, which means it shares similar motor and battery options. There are several key differences of course, the most notable of which are the interior and driving dynamics – as we’ll establish later in this used review.

But before we delve into that, it’s worth clarifying that the GV60 is a brilliant <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a> – so much so that we awarded it a full five-star rating when we reviewed it new. So, is it as good a buy used as it is new?

Engines: There are three versions of the GV60 to choose from: Premium, Sport and Sport Plus. The entry-level Premium version produces 225bhp from a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels. It’s by no means slow, with 0-62mph taking 7.8sec.

The Sport version is err, a bit sportier. It gets an additional motor for the front wheels (making it four-wheel drive), with power jumping to 314bhp. It’s much quicker, with 0-62mph taking 5.5sec.

The range-topping version, Sport Plus, is mind-bogglingly fast. It develops 428bhp in standard mode, which, for context, is more than a Porsche 718 Cayman GTS produces. What’s more, when you select the bright green ‘Boost’ button on the steering wheel, that number jumps to 482bhp for a quick 10-second burst. In this mode, 0-62mph takes just 4.0 seconds; it properly pins you to your seat if you accelerate from a standstill. It’s quite impressive for an electric family SUV, although the additional ‘Drift’ mode seems a bit unnecessary.

All versions are powered by a 77kWh (total) battery, but in Premium form, the GV60 has the longest official range of 321 miles. Unsurprisingly, this then lowers to 292 miles and 289 miles for the Sport and Sport Plus versions respectively because of the extra power.

Ride and handling: The GV60 is one of the most comfortable electric SUVs you can buy. The suspension is well-suited to ruffled UK roads and it absorbs lumps and bumps extremely well. It’s particularly good with the Premium version because of its 19in alloy wheels, which have taller side walls that provide more cushioning than the 20in and 21in wheels on Sport and Sport Plus versions. It’s certainly more comfortable than an EV6 or Ioniq 5 overall.

Amazingly, the comfort-focused suspension doesn’t come at the cost of handling. The GV60 has good body control and it feels suitably tied down on sharper turns. It’s better than an Ioniq 5 and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/ariya/hatchback/review/n24303">Nissan Ariya</a>, but it’s certainly no <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/sports-suvs/n20200">sports SUV</a>.&nbsp;

Interior and practicality: While the GV60’s interior is arguably quite conservative in terms of its design, some elements set it apart from rivals. The most notable is the crystal ball on the centre console, which spins around on start-up to reveal the gear selector. It might sound like a gimmick, but it actually serves a purpose; it’s a useful way of judging whether the car is switched on or off (it’s not always easy to tell with <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric cars</a>).

There’s an interesting mix of materials used for the interior, too. There are soft-touch plastic, faux leather and metal-effect finishes throughout, plus all versions were offered with real Nappa leather as an optional extra.

Unlike the Audi Q4 e-tron, which only comes with a black interior, the GV60 offers black, grey, white and beige colour options. This gives the car a more bespoke feeling, although the build quality isn’t quite as good as the Q4.

For the infotainment, all versions have a 12.3in touchscreen that’s combined with a 12.3in digital driver’s display to create one giant screen. It’s a good set-up and it’s positioned high on the dashboard so it’s easy to see.

The GV60’s infotainment system is one of our favourites. It operates much like BMW’s iDrive system, so you can control it via the touchscreen or a physical rotary controller on the centre console. It’s a great system and it’s easy to operate while driving, plus the layout is simple and the graphics are sharp.

Unlike the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id4/estate/review/n22789">VW ID 4</a> (and most electric SUVs for that matter), the GV60 has physical buttons for the climate controls too. This, combined with the infotainment system, gives it a very user-friendly interior.

Up front, it’s very easy to get comfortable in the GV60. The driver’s seat comes with electric adjustment as standard, plus there’s plenty of head, leg and shoulder room on offer. The driving position isn’t especially high for an SUV, but it still gives you a good view forwards.

Space in the back is less impressive. While there’s acres of leg room available, head room is a little bit tight because of the sloping roof. The middle-seat passenger might struggle the most, because of a slightly raised seat base, but at least there’s a flat floor so there’s plenty of foot space.

The boot isn’t particularly large, either. You get 432 litres of space below the load cover, which is less than an EV6 and Ariya, and much less than a Model Y and ID 4. Still, the GV60 will fit a large weekly shop with ease, plus there’s storage space under the bonnet for the charging cables.

Trims and equipment: All GV60s come with the same level of standard kit, no matter the version. This means all cars come with wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control and an electric tailgate, so it’s very well equipped. You even get heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel.&nbsp;

There are several extras available, including the Nappa leather option mentioned previously. Other options include the Innovation Pack (which adds safety kit such as blind-spot monitoring), a sunroof and digital door mirrors.

GENESIS GV60 Estate

Hyundai has transformed itself from a maker of oddball hatchbacks that sold in small numbers in the UK, to a major rival to the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

The Korean firm’s Ioniq Hybrid is particularly impressive, having beaten the trend-setting Toyota Prius when we tested the cars back to back.

Meanwhile, at the extremes of the Hyundai range you find the tiny i10 city car – a four-time What Car? award winner – and the stylish yet family-friendly Santa Fe SUV.

As a bonus, all of these cars come with the reassurance of a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, whereas most of Hyundai’s rivals offer only three years and 60,000 miles of cover.

HYUNDAI

IONIQ 5

The Ioniq 5 is a&nbsp;comfortable and spacious electric SUV, with a good range and performance to back it up. Used prices are now really competitive.

Used Hyundai Ioniq 5 2021-present

Hear&nbsp;the name <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/ioniq-5/hatchback/review/n22944">Hyundai Ioniq 5</a>&nbsp;for the first time and you might assume it's some kind of alien spacecraft&nbsp;from Star Wars. See it on the street and your assumption could remain intact. It screams sci-fi when, in fact, it's a very real&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a>.&nbsp;

It isn't just its&nbsp;design that's&nbsp;imposing, either, because it's physically larger than photos tend to suggest. For instance, there's&nbsp;three metres between the front and rear axles;&nbsp;you'll find that matches&nbsp;an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/a8/saloon/review/n17302">Audi A8</a> limo. This length allows for&nbsp;vast amounts of passenger space; it also helps&nbsp;Hyundai fit a 77kWh (usable capacity) battery beneath its floor.&nbsp;

Specifications: A smaller battery is&nbsp;available, mind you. The entry-level RWD 170 variant has a&nbsp;58kWh one, with a 168bhp electric motor driving the rear wheels. Performance is respectable, but if that won't cut it,&nbsp;consider&nbsp;the&nbsp;RWD 217; it has a 73kWh battery and 214bhp. It was later replaced by the RWD 228,&nbsp;with its 77kWh battery and 225bhp,&nbsp;in April 2022. Both of these variants are&nbsp;rear-wheel drive.&nbsp;

If a pair of extra driven wheels sounds ideal, there's the AWD 305. It received&nbsp;the same 73kWh battery as the RWD 217, yet gained a second electric motor for four-wheel drive and a grand total of 301bhp. In April 2022, this version was replaced by the 321bhp AWD 325, which also gets the upgraded, 77kWh battery.&nbsp;

You might also sway towards the larger batteries&nbsp;due to their longer ranges. The RWD 170's 238-mile official range is beaten by the&nbsp;RWD 217's 298-mile figure&nbsp;and RWD 228's 315 miles;&nbsp;going for the AWD 305 or AWD 325 knocks around 15 miles off those last two&nbsp;ranges respectively. Do keep in mind that it's difficult to reach official range figures&nbsp;in real-world driving.&nbsp;

Trims and equipment: Decide on an Ioniq 5 in SE Connect trim – the cheapest trim&nbsp;from new – and you'll be limited to the smaller battery. You might&nbsp;also find it lacking in luxuries, although it does get climate control, heated door mirrors and sat-nav.&nbsp;

Premium trim gives you much more, including&nbsp;dual LED projector headlights, a powered tailgate, four-way electric driver’s seat adjustment and heating for the steering wheel and both front seats. Step up to Ultimate for&nbsp;leather upholstery, privacy glass,&nbsp;fully electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a Bose premium sound system and a head-up display.

The Namsan Edition bleeds into excess (both in kit and price), but if that's your thing, you'll enjoy its&nbsp;fully digital side mirrors and door handles that pop out as you walk up to the car. It also gets 'relaxation' front seats (an optional extra on Ultimate trim when new), meaning the seats&nbsp;are eight-way adjustable and can be fully reclined,&nbsp;plus they have a massage function.

Ride and handling: It all sounds very plush, right? Well, the Ioniq 5's driving experience follows a similar theme, with soft suspension making for a comfy ride.&nbsp;On 19in alloy wheels, the car wafts along, smothering most bumps really well. It’s only on faster, undulating roads that things can get&nbsp;bouncy. The 20in alloys found on some Ultimate and Namsan Edition cars don't do comfort any favours, causing the car to thump more noticeably over potholes.

The trade-off of its laid-back ride is that handling is far from sharp. It has been improved thanks to suspension updates in 2022 when the upgraded battery arrived, but the car's nose still doesn’t respond all that quickly to steering inputs, and when the car does agree to change direction, there’s plenty of body lean.&nbsp;That said, there's&nbsp;always plenty of grip on offer and the steering is accurate enough to allow you to position the car with confidence at all speeds. The AWD versions have more traction, so they feel more stable and planted when you're accelerating hard out of corners, especially in the wet.

Nonetheless, the closely related&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a> handles better, with superior agility and composure. That car also gets a higher-quality interior; inside, the Ioniq 5&nbsp;appears modern&nbsp;and stylish, but that's not matched by the&nbsp;quality of its materials. Some plastics aren’t especially tactile – including those used on the passenger’s side of the dashboard and the lower doors – and a few bits even wobble when you prod them.&nbsp;

Interior and practicality: On the plus side, the&nbsp;12.3in infotainment touchscreen is responsive and the graphics are sharp. Even though some of the icons are a little small and fiddly to use on the move, you do at least get some helpful physical shortcut buttons along the bottom of the screen, plus voice control and simple switches on the steering wheel.

There’s lots of space in the front of&nbsp;the Ioniq 5. You’d have to be incredibly tall to have any problem with leg or head room, while the wide interior adds to the sense of spaciousness.&nbsp;Rear leg room is ridiculously generous; even with a 6ft-plus driver up front, a&nbsp;passenger of the same size can sit behind and stretch out.

The rear seats split in a 60/40 arrangement (rather than the more practical 40/20/40 way that lets you fold down each of the seatbacks individually). They can also slide back and forth, not to mention&nbsp;recline.

The generous passenger space doesn’t come at the expense of a practical boot, either. We managed to slot seven carry-on suitcases below the load cover.&nbsp;The Ioniq 5 has only a tiny amount of storage space under its bonnet, with even less on four-wheel-drive versions. There’s just enough underfloor space in the main boot to stow a charging cable, but it remains a rather shallow space.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 Hatchback

Buyers seeking value for money should have Kia towards the top of their shopping list.

Although once a niche brand in the UK, today Kia outsells many more established brands, helped by its market-leading seven-year warranty and a strong reputation for reliability; in fact, Kia regularly finishes towards the top of our reliability surveys.

There are plenty of models to choose from, too, ranging from the small Picanto city car to the Ceed family hatchback and the Sorento large SUV. The Picanto was the first Kia to win its class at the What Car? Car of the Year awards.

For reasonable money when used, the EV6 offers keen handling, a good range and plenty of space.

Used Kia EV6 2021-present

If our <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/awards/new-car-awards">What Car? Car of the Year Awards</a> are anything to go by, you can't go wrong with an electric&nbsp;(<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">EV</a>)&nbsp;Kia.&nbsp;

You see, before the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a>&nbsp;rocked up, we awarded our 2019 top prize to a top-notch <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/niro/estate/review/n24582">Kia e-Niro</a>. The Korean firm was once again victorious when, in 2022, we handed&nbsp;our number one trophy to, you guessed it, the EV6 – the brand's new flagship EV at the time.

Engines &amp; Performance:&nbsp;In entry-level RWD (rear-wheel drive) form, the Kia EV6 has one 226bhp motor driving the rear wheels.&nbsp;The dual-motor AWD (all-wheel drive) version has a second electric motor powering the front wheels, increasing power to 321bhp. A 577bhp GT version joined the line-up in 2022.

On the road, the RWD car can see off the 0-60mph sprint in 6.9sec&nbsp;– faster than the rival&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id4/estate/review/n22789">VW ID 4</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/ariya/hatchback/review/n24303">Nissan Ariya</a>&nbsp;but nowhere near as rapid as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a>&nbsp;Long Range. The EV6 RWD can officially do up to 328 miles on a full charge (depending on the trim level), although 230-270 miles is more realistic in the real world.

Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive model is even quicker&nbsp;and a match for the Model Y Long Range. At our private test track, we timed one accelerating from 0-60mph in just 5.0sec. You pay for that extra performance with a slightly shorter range, but only by around 15 miles.&nbsp;

The GT is a real rocket: 0-62mph in 3.5sec and a 162mph top speed. On top of that, it gets upgraded wheels, tyres, suspension and brakes. Naturally, its range is reduced in comparison with its siblings.&nbsp;

Ride &amp;&nbsp;Handling: In pursuit of building a two-tonne-plus car that handles well, Kia has employed firm&nbsp;suspension – firmer than&nbsp;the mechanically related&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/genesis/gv60/estate/review/n24373">Genesis GV60</a>, for instance. At low speeds, the EV6 can thump over potholes and the ride can feel a bit fidgety at higher speeds, but these impacts are often met with good cushioning, so it's far from uncomfortable.

And, as we touched upon, the benefit of this suspension set-up is good agility, composure and body control in the bends. You're still aware of&nbsp;the EV6's hefty size and weight, especially on a bendy country road, but it's remarkably sharp for what it is.

Next to an early <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/ioniq-5/hatchback/review/n22944">Hyundai Ioniq 5</a> – before the suspension was revised in 2023 – the EV6&nbsp;offers night-and-day better&nbsp;handling. It's also better to drive than the&nbsp;Ariya.&nbsp;

Interior &amp; Practicality:&nbsp;Inside, the EV6 has a loftier driving position than the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-3/saloon/review/n19010">Tesla Model 3</a>&nbsp;saloon, but you won't find yourself looking the driver&nbsp;of a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/land-rover/range-rover/4x4/review/n17353">Range Rover</a>&nbsp;in the eye. Some of our testers also expressed a desire to be sat lower than the driver's seat is&nbsp;able to go –&nbsp;taller people might feel&nbsp;unusually close to the roof in a rather upright driving position.&nbsp;

On the other hand, you'll need really long legs to struggle for legroom in the rear, with the vast majority of people having lots of&nbsp;room to stretch. Head room isn't as generous, but you'll have to be six-foot-plus to take notice.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Considering the EV6's size, its 490-litre boot isn’t all that remarkable. Even so, we managed to fit seven carry-on suitcases below the parcel shelf – the same number as we got into the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q4/estate/review/n23194">Audi Q4 e-tron</a>, but one less than the&nbsp;Ariya.

All versions come with a curved 12.3in touchscreen positioned conveniently high up on the middle of the dashboard. It’s a relatively intuitive operating system, so it's not too distracting to use while you're driving. Everything looks suitably upmarket inside&nbsp;with plenty of gloss-black and rubberised surfaces, and everything feels well screwed together. All the 'leather'&nbsp;is vegan, rather than the real thing.&nbsp;

Trims &amp; Equipment:&nbsp;EV6 Air models are pretty well equipped, with 19in alloys, climate control, rain-sensing wipers, heated door mirrors, adaptive cruise control, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats with driver lumbar support adjustment.

If you upgrade to a GT-Line car, you’ll get some sportier styling details, electronically adjustable front seats, adaptive LED headlights, tinted rear windows and the ability to allow the charging port to double as a 3.5kW three-pin plug socket, which you can use to boil a kettle or even charge another electric car.

GT-Line S models get larger 20in alloys, exterior door handles that automatically pop out, ventilated front seats and heated outer rear seats.&nbsp;

Mazda can be summed up in a single word: bold. Not only do its cars generally look like nothing else on the market, but it’s also invested heavily in innovative engine technology.

So, while many car makers have moved to smaller turbocharged engines, Mazda instead offers larger motors that are still efficient. For example, the entry-level petrol option in the Mazda 3 is a 2.0-litre unit –&nbsp;far larger than what you’ll find in most rivals – but it remains very clean.

Highlights of Mazda’s line-up include the MX-5 sports car, which has won our Convertible of the Year Award multiple times, and the CX-5 large SUV, which was named as our inaugural best car for dog owners.

MX-30

The Mazda MX-30 is smart, likeable and good to drive, but many buyers won't be able to see past its below-par practicality and range.&nbsp;

Used Mazda MX-30 2021-present

It's hard to pigeonhole the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mazda/mx-30/hatchback/review/n22066">Mazda MX-30</a>. Yes, it technically belongs to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a>&nbsp;class,&nbsp;but&nbsp;unlike its peers, the MX-30 has rear-hinged back doors&nbsp;(as a throwback to the old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mazda/rx-8/coupe/used-review/n474">Mazda RX-8</a> sports car) and a rather small electric range similar to the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/honda/honda-e/hatchback/review/n20882">Honda E</a>&nbsp;electric city car.

There's some method to this madness, mind you. Those doors, along with its sloping roofline, give it a sporty, <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/coupe-suvs/n23014">coupé SUV</a> look. The range is born of the MX-30's&nbsp;35.5kWh battery and Mazda argues the reason it's that small –&nbsp;compared with most electric SUVs&nbsp;– is because&nbsp;big lithium-ion batteries create&nbsp;a lot of CO2 during production.&nbsp;

The corollary of all this is a range of only 124 miles, which some might see as a little lacklustre (to put it lightly). What's more,&nbsp;our <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/range-test-how-far-can-electric-cars-really-go/n24836">Real Range</a> testing yielded a more realistic figure of 115 miles.&nbsp;

For context, the rival&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/kona/hatchback/review/n18164">Hyundai Kona Electric</a>&nbsp;is available with an official range of 300 miles. Even the non-SUV <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/renault/zoe/hatchback/review/n152">Renault Zoe</a> manages more than 200 miles on a single charge.&nbsp;

In 2022 a&nbsp;version of the MX-30 with a petrol-powered range extender was&nbsp;released – it officially allows for 373 miles of total range. You'll have to wait a bit for these to hit the used market, mind you.&nbsp;

So, disregarding the range extender&nbsp;for the time being, how's the solely electric version like on the road? Well, its battery powers a 143bhp electric motor that's able to deliver 0-62mph in 9.7sec – pretty tame for an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric car</a>.&nbsp;

Fortunately, in almost every other respect, the MX-30 drives really well.&nbsp;As for the ride, it's even better&nbsp;than the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id3/hatchback/review/n21832">VW ID 3’s</a>. We found it quite comforting over deep callouses and it doesn’t buck about on undulating roads, which the bouncy&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ds/ds-3/hatchback/review/n20402">DS 3 Crossback E-Tense</a>&nbsp;does.

The MX-30's settled ride also helps its cornering stability. Even on bumpy roads, you can trust that it’s not going to get knocked off its line mid-bend, and the nicely judged steering is light yet accurate.

If you take it on a motorway, the range might create some anxiety, but the noise levels won’t. It’s quiet, with decently subdued suspension, wind and tyre noise. There’s just the reasonably pleasant murmur of its fake engine note when you put your foot down.

The driving position in the MX-30 is marvellous. There’s plenty of steering-wheel adjustment and you get electrically adjustable seats with adjustable lumbar support with all trims except entry-level Prime-Line.

The dashboard has quite a futuristic look, with three digital screens and a head-up display. The screens include digital instruments and a 7.0in climate control touchscreen, mounted just below the infotainment touchscreen.&nbsp;The MX-30 is kitted out with built-in sat-nav,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194">Android Auto</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a>&nbsp;plus an eight-speaker stereo. The top GT Sport Tech and Makoto trim have a 12-speaker Bose surround-sound system.

The MX-30 was initially sold in three trim levels:&nbsp;entry-level SE-L Lux, Sport Lux and GT Sport Tech – there was&nbsp;also a First Edition, with&nbsp;only 500 examples ever&nbsp;made.&nbsp;All models received&nbsp;LED headlights,&nbsp;adaptive cruise control, sat-nav, a head-up display and a reversing camera.

Sport Lux added&nbsp;heated, electric front seats and keyless entry, while&nbsp;top-spec GT Sport Tech got a sunroof, a Bose sound system and a heated steering wheel, too.&nbsp;In 2022, the MX-30's trims were renamed and currently are&nbsp;Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line and Makoto.&nbsp;

If you’re tall and happen to find yourself in the front of a MX-30, we think you’ll be quite happy. There’s plenty of room, whether you’re long in the leg, long in the body – or both. Plus, there’s the width: you get&nbsp;enough to put distance between you and your passenger.

That’s all good, but then we move on to the rear seats, which are, well, not good. For a start, you have to get in, and that isn’t as easy as you might think. The small&nbsp;rear-hinged back doors&nbsp;that can only be opened when the front doors are open put a big cross in the usability box. If you’re tall, you’ll need to contort yourself through a narrow opening and on to the seat, which you’ll barely fit in. There’s little head room and even less leg room – or no leg room if the front seats are slid fully back.

The MX-30’s boot is quite small, especially next to other&nbsp;electric SUVs. It’s less accommodating than that of many <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/small-cars/n16997">small cars</a>, and there are no clever touches such as a height-adjustable boot floor or space under the floor for the charging cables.

Mazda MX-30 Hatchback

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.

MERCEDES-BENZ

The Mercedes EQA borders on being a steal used&nbsp;– its plush interior and generous kit list certainly suggest so, but its ride and handling hold it back

Used Mercedes EQA 2021-present

You might be&nbsp;cautiously captivated by the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/eqa/hatchback/review/n22732">Mercedes EQA</a>: intrigued by the luxury, electric power and SUV body, but put off by the price of a new one.&nbsp;

However, have no fear, the EQA is one of the cheapest premium <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUVs</a>&nbsp;you can find on the used market. A few are even available for less than £20,000.&nbsp;

Performance &amp; Range:&nbsp;Your entry-level variant is the 250. Acceleration is acceptable, albeit very tame by <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric car</a> standards, with 0-62mph happening in 8.9sec.&nbsp;Range is a similar story.&nbsp;You'll&nbsp;officially travel&nbsp;263 miles on a full charge – around 210 miles in real-world conditions.&nbsp;

The 250+ gets a larger battery – 70.5kWh, up from 66.5kWh – and a more impressive, 316-mile official range. Performance stays the same, though.&nbsp;

It's the opposite with the 300 and 350 variants. They have the 250's battery and range but up the pace. The 300 and 350 can reach 60mph from a standstill in a respectable 7.7sec and 6.0sec respectively. That's a decent&nbsp;improvement, although they still can't&nbsp;deliver the same sucker punch that a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/jaguar/i-pace/estate/review/n122">Jaguar I-Pace</a>, let alone a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a>&nbsp;Performance,&nbsp;can.&nbsp;

Ride &amp; Handling:&nbsp;The EQA is no spring chicken in the corners, either. The steering is&nbsp;light and mostly accurate (so it's great around town), but it's also&nbsp;very numb just off-centre and&nbsp;it never gives you a great sense of connection with the front wheels. There's a lot of body lean as well.&nbsp;

It’s all the more disappointing, then, that the EQA’s ride doesn’t make up for its lacklustre handling. Even on 18in alloy wheels (the smallest available) and with optional-from-new adaptive suspension, the EQA&nbsp;has a firm, unsettled ride at all speeds.

Interior &amp; Practicality:&nbsp;At least the driving position is comfortable,&nbsp;with plenty of adjustment for the seat and steering wheel.&nbsp;The driver display is paired with a second 10.0in screen that handles infotainment, and the two are slickly fused together to give the impression of a single giant widescreen.&nbsp;

This is one of the best infotainment systems around. It’s the latest generation of <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/new-car-deals/make/mercedes-benz">Mercedes’</a> MBUX system, and it can be controlled via the touchscreen itself, through the (quite capable) voice command function, or – crucially – using a trackpad between the driver and passenger seats.

That conveniently located trackpad (which is augmented by smaller pads on the steering wheel that can be operated with your thumbs) makes this one of the easiest and safest systems to operate while driving.

Only BMW’s slightly more intuitive iDrive system is better, and it’s certainly easier to use than the touchscreen-only system of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc40-recharge-pure-electric/estate/review/n22063">Volvo XC40 Recharge</a>, which is also spoilt by small menu icons that are difficult to hit on the move. <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194">Android Auto</a>&nbsp;are present on all EQAs.

The other good news is that the&nbsp;impressive tech and attractive design are backed up by very good build quality. The EQA is right up there with the XC40 in terms of general fit and finish, with materials that feel very high in quality; it’s only a slight wobble in the climate control panel that lets the side down a little.

Compared to&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/gla/hatchback/review/n17173">Mercedes GLA</a>&nbsp;that it’s based on, the EQA's rear floor has been raised to accommodate the batteries. As a result, the rear bench isn’t as far above the floor as you might be used to, and your knees will be higher than they would be in a regular GLA&nbsp; – or many other electric rivals, for that matter.

There’s no compromise on legroom, though, so six-footers will still be able to get in the back and stretch out in reasonable comfort. In fact, the EQA is roomier in the back than the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/e-niro/estate/review/n18388">Kia e-Niro</a>&nbsp;and on a par with the spacious&nbsp;XC40 Recharge.

Unfortunately, the EQA disappoints when it comes to boot capacity. At 340 litres, it has 100 litres less volume than the&nbsp;GLA and is in fact a similar size to that of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/renault/zoe/hatchback/review/n152">Renault Zoe</a>&nbsp;(338-litre), which is a much smaller electric car. Its closer rivals the e-Niro and XC40 boast 451 litres and 452 litres of storage respectively, and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/mustang-mach-e/estate/review/n22387">Ford Mustang Mach E</a>&nbsp;a whopping 502 litres.&nbsp;

Trims &amp; Equipment:&nbsp;The&nbsp;two available trims are Sport and AMG Line. As well as front and rear parking sensors,&nbsp;reversing camera, heated front seats and automatic climate control that you get with Sport, AMG Line has&nbsp;some sporty styling touches, inside and out.&nbsp;

The Mercedes EQB is an enticing electric SUV proposition that has seven seats, a premium badge and tempting used prices

In an old episode of&nbsp;The Simpsons, Homer gets banned from Moe's Tavern, only for a suspiciously familiar&nbsp;fella – named Guy Incognito – to turn up&nbsp;at the bar a few scenes later. Naturally, it's thought to be Homer in disguise, before Guy is revealed to&nbsp;be someone else entirely. It was a misunderstanding, just like the one you might experience upon glancing at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/eqb/estate/review/n24403">Mercedes EQB</a>&nbsp;for the first time.&nbsp;

You see, except for a slightly different front end&nbsp;and set of wheels, the EQB looks eerily similar to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/glb/estate/review/n20538">Mercedes GLB</a>. However, while the GLB is available as a petrol and&nbsp;diesel&nbsp;car, the EQB is solely an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a>.&nbsp;

Performance &amp; Range: There are three "engine"&nbsp;options to choose from. The 250+ delivers&nbsp;acceptable performance&nbsp;(0-62mph takes 8.9 seconds), although its pace is nothing to write home next to a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a> and many other rapid&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric cars</a>. Its forte is rather its&nbsp;impressive 321-mile official range – that almost matches the Model Y Long Range and its 331-mile figure.

Go for a EQB 300 or 350 model and you won't go quite as far are on a single charge: both possess the an identical 255-mile official range, which remains respectable. On the plus side, they're quicker, with the&nbsp;300's 0-62mph time being 8.0sec and the 350's a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/hot-hatches/n17005">hot-hatch</a>-like 6.2sec.

Refinement is an EQB strong suit. There’s just a hint of motor whine when accelerating and it&nbsp;quietens down and disappears&nbsp;at a constant cruise. Road and suspension noise are minimal as well. There is a little bit of wind noise around the pillars – blame the rather steep front windscreen and general lack of background engine noise for that.

Ride &amp; Handling: Body control is decent, especially when you consider the how big the EQB. What's more, the steering is precise during low-speed manoeuvres, with a pleasing build-up in weight at faster speeds – that gives you the confidence to place the car accurately in corners.&nbsp;

The suspension is on the firm side and, particularly on 19in wheels, the ride can get a bit bumpy.&nbsp;For a more comfortable journey, you'll want the entry-level AMG Line&nbsp;version with its 18in wheels. The ride is better overall than the&nbsp;Model Y's, but&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q4/estate/review/n23194">Audi Q4 e-tron</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev9/estate/review/n26277">Kia EV9</a>&nbsp;serve up even smoother driving experiences.

Interior &amp; Practicality:&nbsp;Every EQB gets multicoloured ambient interior lighting, along with&nbsp;twin digital displays. Overall,&nbsp;the interior has a clean and modern look. The most prominent areas, such as the tops of the doors and dashboard, are upholstered in soft plastic. Some of the materials used lower down are considerably less appealing, but&nbsp;fortunately&nbsp;they aren't&nbsp;in your eye line and are far from your main touchpoints.&nbsp;

The boxy shape of the EQB means there's lots of front space. Plus,&nbsp;even the optional-from-new&nbsp;sunroof doesn’t do much to dent head room. Leg room is plentiful, even for tall drivers and front-seat passengers.&nbsp;Six-footers will find they have plenty of room in the EQB’s second row of seats, with the seats capable of sliding&nbsp;back&nbsp;to maximise that. However, three adults will find themselves rubbing shoulders sitting side by side.

The EQB’s trump card is that it has two more seats that fold up from the boot floor – something the Q4 e-tron and Model Y don't offer. The gap you have to squeeze through to get to them is a little narrow, plus head room and knee room is extremely tight once you’re in – even with the second-row seats slid forwards.&nbsp;

With five seats in use, there's 495 litres of boot space up to the tonneau cover – enough for a couple of buggies or large suitcases. A Q4 e-tron offers slightly more capacity, but the EQB boot is much bigger than that of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/ex40/4x4/review/n22063">Volvo XC40 Recharge (now dubbed the Volvo EX40)</a>.

Trims &amp; Equipment:&nbsp;Standard-from-new equipment is generous. AMG Line gets&nbsp;18in alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors with a back-up camera, an electric tailgate, a 10in infotainment touchscreen, heated front seats and dual-zone climate control.

AMG Line Executive gets sportier styling details and 19in wheels, while AMG Line Premium adds adaptive suspension (helping alleviate the firm ride somewhat), wireless phone-charging and 20in alloy wheels.&nbsp;AMG Line Premium Plus adds a panoramic glass sunroof, electrically adjustable front seats, a Burmester sound system and a head-up display.&nbsp;

Peugeot has its strongest model line-up for some years, with some of its cars now rated by our testers as being among the very best available.

Highlights focus around the firm’s newest SUVs, the 3008 and 5008. The 5008 was named Large SUV of the Year at the 2018 What Car? Awards, thanks to its appealing blend of space, interior quality and low running costs.

That bodes well for future launches, too, because many of the learnings from these cars will be passed on as new versions of existing cars are launched – something that could take many years, because the Peugeot range is so big, ranging from an entry-level supermini with the 108 to an executive saloon with the 508, up into the SUV range and also vans.

Buyers should evaluate some of the lower-rated cars in the range more carefully, though. Some are now quite old, and are subsequently left behind in terms of quality when compared with the opposition, making them below-average buys, in our estimation.

To understand&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/2008/estate/review/n20552">Peugeot e-2008</a>, first we must decipher it. Perhaps obviously, the 'e' denotes&nbsp;the model is&nbsp;electric.&nbsp;The rest refers&nbsp;to its internal combustion counterpart, the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/2008/estate/used-review/n23589">2008</a> small SUV, which is itself based on the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/208/hatchback/used-review/n22549">Peugeot 208</a> small hatchback. We could dive further down this rabbit hole, but the code is already cracked – we have a compact <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-suvs-2022/n23038">electric SUV</a> on our hands.&nbsp;

It has a usable battery size of 50kWh&nbsp;and a&nbsp;134bhp electric motor driving the front wheels;&nbsp;unsurprisingly, this is all the same as in&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/e208/hatchback/used-review/n22819">Peugeot e-208</a>. It's&nbsp;your sole set-up, but does it prove an Achilles heel?&nbsp;&nbsp;

Performance &amp; Range:&nbsp;As far as performance is concerned, the e-2008 is&nbsp;punchy around town (more so&nbsp;than many petrol and diesel alternatives) and good&nbsp;enough on the motorway, but it's far from a ballistic missile like a fair few&nbsp;electric cars are (the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a>&nbsp;being one example). The e-2008 managed&nbsp;0-60mph in 9.0sec in our test.

The e-2008's official range is modest, at 206 miles, and that figure is likely to drop to around 150 miles in real-world conditions, especially over the winter months. If you do more than the occasional&nbsp;long journey, you might want to consider rivals such as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/kona-electric/hatchback/used-review/n22559">Hyundai Kona Electric</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/e-niro/estate/used-review/n22663">Kia e-Niro</a>, both of which have official ranges of more than 280 miles.

A 2023 facelift&nbsp;saw the replacement of the 134bhp motor with&nbsp;a more powerful,&nbsp;154bhp one – it only cuts 0.5sec off the 0-60mph time, though. The battery saw an upgrade as well:&nbsp;the e-2008 now has 250 miles of official range.&nbsp;

Ride &amp; Handling:&nbsp;The steering wheel is rather small and that&nbsp;takes some time getting used to.&nbsp;Small inputs create quite quick responses and, at the same time, the steering is quite vague to begin with. Whether you’re trying to stay straight on the motorway or sweep accurately through corners, it demands greater concentration than tidy-handling cars such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id3/hatchback/used-review/n23492">Volkswagen&nbsp;ID 3</a>.

It also leans more in corners than the ID 3, making it less planted and agile. It's capable, but not a driver's car by any means. It's better suited to those who want cool, calm and collected transport.&nbsp;However, road and wind noise are very well suppressed in the e-2008, while&nbsp;the ride is more comfortable than a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mg-motor-uk/zs-ev/hatchback/used-review/n22835">MG ZS EV's</a>.&nbsp;

Interior &amp; Practicality:&nbsp;Peugeot's 'i-Cockpit' design means your steering wheel sits below&nbsp;the driver's dials. The reason it's under is so the dials are in your eyeline, but it won't line up with everyone's preferred driving position. As such, it's something&nbsp;you should try for yourself first.

We have no complaints about front space and rear space is more than adequate. Only&nbsp;those taller than six feet will find head and leg room&nbsp;tight in the back. The boot can hold&nbsp;five carry-on suitcases below the&nbsp;parcel shelf – the same as the&nbsp;ID 3 – and that translates to a reasonable-sized buggy or a decent&nbsp;amount of shopping.&nbsp;

The interior&nbsp;is&nbsp;pretty classy, too. The switches have an expensive feel and there’s a nice mix of materials everywhere, with tactile upper surfaces complemented by gloss-black trims that in the main feel solid.

Trims &amp; Equipment:&nbsp;Entry-level Active trim was dropped from the range soon after release because it wasn't popular. That means the entry point, in effect, is Active Premium, which comes with&nbsp;16in alloy wheels, climate control, automatic lights and wipers, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.&nbsp;

Stepping up to Allure&nbsp;trim grants you&nbsp;17in wheels, privacy glass, passenger seat height adjustment and a rear-view camera. You don't even need to upgrade&nbsp;to GT Premium for the creature comforts to come at you thick and fast, because GT&nbsp;already has a lot.&nbsp;It has faux-leather/cloth seats, ambient lighting, heated front seats, full LED headlights, front parking sensors&nbsp;and a 10.0in&nbsp;infotainment screen (up from the standard 7.0in unit).

Speaking of infotainment, the smaller screen does without sat-nav. That’s not really a problem, though, because it has&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194">Android Auto</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a>&nbsp;smartphone mirroring, so you can use navigation apps from your phone via the&nbsp;infotainment screen.&nbsp;The larger touchscreen has navigation included. You'll need Allure&nbsp;Premium (or above) to have your analogue dials switched for a 3D digital instrument panel.&nbsp;

One of the greatest success stories in the car world of recent decades is Skoda’s rise to become a hugely credible mainstream maker of good-value, good-sense cars.

Central to that success has been its place within the VW Group, alongside the Volkswagen brand itself, plus the likes of Seat and Audi. That has given it access to exactly the same underpinnings for its cars as the other brands, and it has complemented this by adding its own developments, from the way the cars drive and ride through to the features they have and the pricing.

The result is a range that extends from a city car to a large executive saloon, with family and large seven-seat SUVs too. There’s a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines, all of which are competitive for the class.

As a result, Skoda has a range of cars that is almost entirely class-leading or among the class leaders, and it has enjoyed long-time success at the What Car? Awards as a result.

For the money, few electric SUVs come close to being as practical and comfortable as the Skoda Enyaq

Used Skoda Enyaq 2021-present

Before you remortgage your home to buy a large <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a>,&nbsp;let us introduce you to a model that, while not cheap per se, is comparatively&nbsp;affordable – especially when used. This is the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/enyaq/4x4/review/n22909">Skoda Enyaq</a>.&nbsp;

It hasn't been thrown together using bargain-bin parts, either.&nbsp;The Enyaq shares its mechanical underpinnings and other parts with the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q4/estate/review/n23194">Audi Q4 e-tron</a> and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id4/estate/review/n22789">VW&nbsp;ID 4</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;both of which are good to drive and travel&nbsp;decent distances&nbsp;on a single charge.

Performance and range:&nbsp;The entry-level version, badged 60,&nbsp;has a 58kWh battery (this was later changed to 50 in 2024, with a new 52kWh battery).&nbsp;If you go for an 80 or 80X model, you’ll get a&nbsp;77kWh battery. Above those variants is the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/enyaq/4x4/review/n24254">Skoda Enyaq vRS</a>&nbsp;which&nbsp;gets the same&nbsp;77kWh battery but gains quicker performance. We'll review that 'hot' version separately.

The 60 and 80 have rear-wheel drive, with the 60 putting out 177bhp&nbsp;and the 80 delivering 201bhp. Acceleration is good&nbsp;in both versions, and the difference between the two&nbsp;isn’t dramatic, partly because the 80 has a heavier battery pack. It’s a different story with the 80X, which&nbsp;has four-wheel drive for better traction to deploy the impressive 261bhp at its disposal.

As for range, the 80 version has a clear edge. It can officially manage up to 339&nbsp;miles on a full charge (332&nbsp;miles in Sportline, and 318&nbsp;miles in 80X Sportline guises). Mind you, even the 60 has a very respectable 246-mile official range, but the 50 does drop it down to 234 miles officially.

Ride and handling:&nbsp;The Enyaq rides well and handles tidily.&nbsp;The driving experience is quite relaxed rather than engaging.&nbsp;As long as you're not overzealous, it doesn't roll too much through corners, and the light yet precise steering allows you to position the car with confidence. Rear-wheel-drive models have a tight turning circle, helping you&nbsp;tackle tight manoeuvres without too much trouble.

There's not&nbsp;much road noise&nbsp;except&nbsp;on really coarse surfaces, and only the faint whistle of wind around the door mirrors at a steady 70mph cruise. Indeed, our only slight criticism is the background "thud, thud, thud" from the suspension that can be heard when you’re driving along a bumpy stretch of&nbsp;road.

Interior and practicality:&nbsp;The quality of the interior is very good for an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric car</a> of its original price point.&nbsp;In short, it feels pretty well screwed together&nbsp;and there's plenty of squidgy plastic on the dashboard and the insides of the doors, plus piano black and metal highlights to jazz things up.

All&nbsp;versions have a big 13in touchscreen positioned high up on the dashboard that’s tilted slightly towards the driver. It’s really easy to see and reach, but the&nbsp;software isn't always that responsive,&nbsp;sometimes&nbsp;taking&nbsp;a moment to load&nbsp;and occasionally crashing. It's not as bad as the system in the ID 4, though.&nbsp;

In both the front and back seats, six-foot adults have lots of&nbsp;room to stretch, while the boot is absolutely huge – bigger even than an ID 4’s – and takes up to nine carry-on suitcases under the tonneau cover. It's also easy to load thanks to the wide tailgate opening and reasonably&nbsp;low&nbsp;load lip.&nbsp;

Trims and equipment:&nbsp;Even the 60 has a few luxuries, including dual-zone climate control, 19in alloys, power-folding door mirrors, auto-dimming mirrors and cruise control.&nbsp;The 80 adds steering-wheel-mounted paddles&nbsp;for adjusting the level of <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/what-is-regenerative-braking-and-how-does-it-work/n25212">regenerative braking</a> on the move, along with a heated steering wheel and extra parking aids.&nbsp;

Instead of picking a&nbsp;trim as you do with most models, the&nbsp;Enyaq is available&nbsp;with varying design grades.&nbsp;With Loft,&nbsp;large parts of the dashboard are trimmed in fabric. The Suite and ecoSuite versions swap that for artificial leather.

Sportline models have a sportier look and, if the original owner opted for the optional Maxx package, adaptive dampers. They&nbsp;allow&nbsp;you to tune the suspension stiffness between two extremes –&nbsp;cushier&nbsp;or more composed – as desired.

The Maxx package also includes the Comfort Seat Package Plus, which adds a massaging driver's seat.&nbsp;Wireless phone-charging was optional on most versions (as part of the Clever Package) and came as standard with Sportline.

Skoda ENYAQ 4x4

Owned by Mercedes-Benz and with a reputation for making small, clever cars, Smart offers a striking, upmarket alternative to more conventional rivals.

It currently has a two-car line-up, the smaller of the two being the distinctive Fortwo, which, as its name suggests, is an ultra-short two-seater that uses an unusual rear-engined configuration to deliver the sort of turning circle that even London taxis can only dream of. It's a doddle to park in small spaces, too.

Smart's 'family car' is the Forfour, which is little more than a stretched version of the Fortwo, with a second row of seats and a larger boot. It's more of a natural rival for cars like the Hyundai i10 or Kia Picanto.

On paper, both cars come at a considerable price premium when compared with rivals, something it says is justified by its badge appeal and the technology in the cars.&nbsp;However, sales have been slow and there are often keen Target Price deals to be found.

HASHTAG 1

The Smart #1 has a plush interior, strong performance and plenty of kit. It's a great used buy, although&nbsp;there are more practical alternatives

<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">Electric SUVs</a> are pretty commonplace these days, but the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/smart/hashtag-1/hatchback/review/n25016">Smart #1</a> does a very good job of being different. Not only does it have a very Gen Z name (which is pronounced “Smart Hashtag One”), but it’s also a very distinctive car to look at, with a modern design that frequently draws the attention of passers by.&nbsp;

Smart is renowned for not doing things by the book, as noted in its past by the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/smart/fortwo-coupe/city-car/used-review/n958">Smart Fortwo</a> city car, which was a revolutionary model when it was launched in 1998 because of its tiny dimensions, rear-mounted engine and “safety cell” structure.&nbsp;

The #1 is a very different car to the Fortwo, though. It’s much larger and fits five people, plus it was the first car to be developed under a 50/50 joint venture between Mercedes and Chinese car giant Geely (Mercedes was Smart’s original owner before this).

While it’s quite different to Smarts of old, we’ve been quite enthusiastic about the #1 as a new car and we’ve given it a few <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/awards/new-car-awards">What Car? Awards</a> to commemorate its talents. But is it as good of a buy used as it is new?

Engines: One thing you won’t be lacking in the #1 is power, because even the entry-level version gets a 268bhp electric motor that moves this electric SUV from 0-62mph in just 6.7sec. In our tests, we managed the same sprint in just 5.8sec, so it’s no slouch. It’s much faster than most of its rivals, including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/kona/hatchback/review/n18164">Hyundai Kona Electric</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/jeep/avenger/hatchback/review/n25706">Jeep Avenger Electric</a>.&nbsp;

For a slightly mad boost in power, there’s also a Brabus version. It gets two electric motors (and four-wheel drive) that produce 422bhp, which cuts the 0-62mph sprint down to a mind-boggling 3.9sec. It’s impressive and it will shock some <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/performance-cars/n23035">performance cars</a> at the traffic lights, but it does reach a point where it’s almost too quick for a car like this.&nbsp;

There are two battery options in the #1. The entry-level Pro gets a 49kWh (total capacity) battery that gives an official range of 193 miles, while the Pro+, Premium and Brabus versions get a larger 66kWh battery.&nbsp;

The range of these versions differs slightly. The Pro+ and Premium can travel 260 miles and 273 miles respectively, while the Brabus can manage 248 miles. Those figures are similar to most of its rivals, including the Avenger Electric and Kona Electric.&nbsp;

Ride and handling:&nbsp;The #1’s suspension is quite firm, which undoubtedly gives it a sporty feel. This means the #1 has a slightly choppy low-speed ride, but on faster A-roads and motorways, it’s generally more comfortable. While it’s not as supple as a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev3/estate/review/n27102" target="_blank">Kia EV3</a>, it is roughly on par with a Kona Electric and Avenger Electric for comfort.

The #1 handles corners surprisingly well and feels agile, helped by the precise and well-weighted steering. You can also adjust the weighting on the touchscreen.

The Brabus version is firmer than the regular car, which means it’s unsettled at both low and high speeds. While it’s slightly more agile, it’s not exactly fun to drive.&nbsp;

Interior and practicality: It’s super easy to get comfortable behind the wheel of the #1. There’s plenty of steering and electric seat adjustment (including adjustable lumbar support) to help you find the right driving position, plus forward visibility is excellent, thanks to a large windscreen and thin pillars. Rear visibility is less good, but all versions come with front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera to help with this.&nbsp;

For the driver, there’s a 9.2in digital driver’s display (and a head-up display on range-topping versions). It’s quite a narrow screen, but it’s bright, clear and crisp.

All versions come with a large 12.8in <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-car-infotainment-systems-tested-and-rated/n21269">infotainment touchscreen</a> that sits in the middle of the dashboard. While the screen is bright and responsive, the layout is fiddly and unintuitive. The menu icons for your sat-nav, climate and media functions are all quite small, which makes them difficult to tap on the move, plus there’s quite a lot of info on show on the home screen. The systems in the EV3 and Kona Electric are more intuitive overall.

More positively, interior quality is excellent. There’s plenty of soft-touch plastic on the dashboard and doors, and all of the buttons and switches feel solid and well-damped. The hard plastics have a nice grain to them too, which can’t be said for many of its rivals, including the Avenger Electric.

You won’t have much trouble with space in both the front and back of the #1. It’s been designed with this in mind, because there’s plenty of head and leg room available. It’s a bit tight with three people sitting in the back seats, though.

Unfortunately, the boot has taken a bit of a hit to accommodate the spacious passenger area. It’s quite small at just 273 litres, which is less than the Kona and Avenger by quite some margin. We only managed to fit three carry-on suitcases in there.

Trims and equipment: There are three main trims for the regular #1: Pro, Pro+ and Premium. Entry-level Pro is really well equipped, with dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/smart/hashtag-1/hatchback/review/cruise%20control">adaptive cruise control</a>, a sunroof and keyless entry. Pro+ comes with the same amount of kit, but it gives you a bigger battery for a longer range.&nbsp;

Premium trim adds some useful extra kit, including matrix LED headlights and a head-up display. It also gives you an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/electric-car-heat-pump/n27141">EV heat pump</a> (for more efficient warming of the interior) that helps boost the car’s efficiency and range.&nbsp;

The Brabus version gets some sporty styling touches, including bonnet vents, red brake calipers and seatbelts, and an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel. Other than that, it comes with a similar amount of kit to Premium trim.

Tesla is a US brand&nbsp;that revolutionised&nbsp;the car industry, putting <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-cars-2022/n17000">electric cars</a> in the limelight&nbsp;for the first time – helped by the personality and profile of boss Elon Musk.

Today, Tesla has a broader&nbsp;line-up than ever, with the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-3/saloon/review/n19010">Tesla Model 3</a> saloon&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a> SUV the company's cheapest models. For those with bigger budgets or a need for more space, there's the larger <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-s/hatchback/review/n150">Tesla Model S</a> saloon and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-x/hatchback/review/n161">Tesla&nbsp;Model X</a> SUV.&nbsp;A&nbsp;new Roadster, complete with supercar-beating acceleration, is also in the works.

Model Y

The Tesla Model Y&nbsp;has technology, performance and practicality in spades. Used prices are beginning to look attractive, too.&nbsp;

Used Tesla Model Y 2022-present

Congratulations, Elon Musk, you did it. With&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a> in&nbsp;the brand's line-up, the&nbsp;range finally spells out "S3XY". What's more, it would have spelt&nbsp;the proper word if&nbsp;Ford had never called dibs on the Model E name.&nbsp;

Now, you can be the judge of whether this <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a> is an automotive smokeshow or not, but what we can tell you is that it didn't end up looking similar to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-3/saloon/review/n19010">Tesla Model 3</a> by coincidence. You see, a plethora of parts are shared between the two cars. Essentially, you can think of the Model Y as a Model 3 that's&nbsp;been pumped full of growth hormone to give it&nbsp;a higher driving position, more room inside and some SUV style.&nbsp;

Power &amp; performance: You can choose between RWD, Long Range and Performance versions, depending on how important acceleration and range is to you. As for the former attribute, the Model Y isn’t quite as rapid as an equivalent&nbsp;Model 3&nbsp;(blame the extra weight for that). Mind you, at our private test track, we timed a Long Range version from 0-60mph and it managed the sprint&nbsp;in 4.8sec. How about the range-topping Performance model? Well, that&nbsp;has a&nbsp;supercar-rivalling official 0-60mph time of 3.5sec.&nbsp;

The entry-level RWD (rear-wheel drive) Model Y managed 0-60mph in 6.9sec in our tests – that's&nbsp;plenty fast enough for most buyers. The RWD has a much shorter official range than the Long Range (283&nbsp;miles against 331 miles). The Performance version officially manages 319&nbsp;miles on a single charge.

While undoubtedly quick, the rest of the driving experience leaves a few things to be desired. For a start, comfort isn't its strong suit, because the ride is quite busy, often jostling&nbsp;you around in your seat over uneven patches of road. The incredibly quick steering that works well on the Model 3 has been carried over. However,&nbsp;with the slightly more lethargic responses of an SUV, it makes the Model Y feel a bit nervous in the bends.&nbsp;

Trims &amp; equipment: On the plus side, all Model Ys come&nbsp;with front and rear parking sensors, plus there are multiple cameras around the car to help with manoeuvring.&nbsp;LED headlights are also standard from new, as is cruise&nbsp;control, adaptive cruise control, faux-leather seats (heated in the front and back), an electric tailgate and keyless entry via an app on your smartphone.&nbsp;

The Model Y has the&nbsp;same 15.0in touchscreen infotainment system as the Model 3. The operating system is fairly intuitive, and while some of the smaller icons can be distracting to hit accurately while you’re driving, the system is&nbsp;responsive once you’ve made your selection.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There are loads of useful features (<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-sat-nav-apps/n24915">sat-nav</a>&nbsp;and web browsing, for example), welcome additions (such as Netflix and Spotify) and some purely fun applications (driving games controlled using the steering wheel and the ability to make whoopee cushion noises). You also get two easily accessible wireless phone-charging mats located below the infotainment screen and&nbsp;USB-C ports for rapid device charging&nbsp;in the large, covered centre console storage bin.

Interior &amp; practicality: Anyone sitting in the front is unlikely to have any complaints about space in the Model Y, no matter how tall they are. Plus, as we touched upon, there's more rear leg and head room in the Model Y than in the&nbsp;Model 3&nbsp;(although not by a dramatic amount). A couple of six-footers will be more than comfortable enough on a long journey and,&nbsp;thanks to the flat floor, a third passenger sitting in the middle won’t feel too hard done by.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Model Y has a huge boot –&nbsp;especially when you factor in the large well hidden under the floor. There’s also a smaller underfloor storage area directly behind the rear seats, which is a great place to stow the charging cables.

The hatchback tailgate makes the Model Y a much more practical option than the Model 3. Fitting a big buggy inside is no problem at all, and all versions have an electric tailgate that can be opened and closed using the touchscreen, from the Tesla app on your phone or by pressing a button on the boot lid.

Toyota is a company undergoing a quiet revolution, as it works hard to replace its sensible but somewhat bland reputation with one for being a bit more daring, in areas such as the styling of its cars and its enthusiastic leadership of cutting-edge technology, such as hybrid systems.

That process seems to be working for buyers, with the hugely popular and striking-looking C-HR SUV in particular attracting a great deal of interest. The latest version of the hybrid Prius is also rated highly by What Car?; it’s the first Prius to go on sale that our testers have felt can truly compete all round with existing petrol or diesel rivals.

However, it’s worth noting that this period of transition is also a work in progress, and that many of the firm’s cars are still rated as being no more than average among class rivals by our testers.

TOYOTA

BZ4X

The Toyota bZ4X is a fine all-rounder but there are quite a few more attractive used buys in its class

Used Toyota bZ4X 2022-present

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/bz4x/hatchback/review/n24187">Toyota bZ4X</a>: it might sound like something out of Star Wars – a droid akin to&nbsp;C-3PO&nbsp;or R2-D2, perhaps – but it's actually an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-suvs-2022/n23038">electric SUV</a>&nbsp;from the present day, rather than a&nbsp;long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.&nbsp;

In case you're curious, bZ&nbsp;refers to Toyota's eco-conscious Beyond Zero&nbsp;strategy. The 4, meanwhile, signifies the car's size – it's roughly as big as a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/rav4/4x4/review/n130">Toyota RAV4</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;and the X marks it out as an SUV.

Performance &amp; Range:&nbsp;The single-motor, front-wheel drive bZ4X is plenty quick enough. In our tests, it managed to sprint from 0-60mph in 7.1sec – very slightly quicker than a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a>&nbsp;RWD.

The four-wheel-drive version is faster, but not by as much as you might imagine. It's more powerful, yes, but also heavier, and can&nbsp;officially do 0-62mph in&nbsp;6.9sec. It&nbsp;doesn't&nbsp;deliver the neck-snapping acceleration of an&nbsp;EV6&nbsp;AWD or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a>&nbsp;Long Range, but certainly accelerates quicker than most petrol or diesel equivalents.

All models have the same&nbsp;71.4kWh (usable capacity) battery, but the more efficient front-wheel-drive&nbsp;version can officially do up to 317 miles (depending on the trim). In our tests, efficiency was slightly behind the EV6 RWD&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/mustang-mach-e/estate/review/n22387">Ford Mustang Mach-E</a>&nbsp;Standard Range RWD, suggesting a real-world range of around 250 miles.&nbsp;

The heavier four-wheel-drive model can officially manage a reasonable 286 miles on a charge. We haven't had a chance to put this version through our real-world tests yet, though.&nbsp;

In all, the bZ4X falls behind its rivals when it comes to&nbsp;range. The long range versions of the EV6, Model Y,&nbsp;Mustang Mach-E and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/enyaq/4x4/review/n22909">Skoda Enyaq</a> can all travel farther than the bZ4x officially, even in its leggiest front-wheel drive&nbsp;form.&nbsp;

Ride &amp; Handling:&nbsp;The suspension is noticeably softer than on the Model Y, giving the bZ4X&nbsp;a more supple ride. Indeed, comfort is roughly on a par&nbsp;with the EV6.

Fortunately, that hasn't come at the expense of handling, because the bZ4X goes round corners without too much lean and inspires plenty of confidence. Yes, the lower-riding EV6 is more agile but the bZ4X has the edge over many other rivals, including the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id4/estate/review/n22789">VW ID.4</a>.

The steering is&nbsp;also naturally weighted and builds weight progressively as you turn into corners, giving you confidence.

Interior &amp; Practicality:&nbsp;The bZ4X has a relatively low roofline for an SUV, but the interior still feels open and airy thanks to the tall&nbsp;side&nbsp;windows. You also sit high up in the car, which not only helps give you a good view out to the front and sides but also makes you feel like you're driving a proper SUV.

Interior quality is a mixed bag. There are some suitably upmarket materials on show, including soft-touch plastic on&nbsp;the insides of the doors, fabric inserts on the dashboard and gloss 'piano' black across large swathes of the centre console. Less impressive are the low-rent door pulls. On balance, the EV6 feels a bit more upmarket inside.

Rear leg room is frankly ridiculous – and in a good way. Due to the bZ4X’s long wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels), you’ll have loads of knee room, even if you're tall and are sitting behind someone similarly lofty.

Head room isn't so great, and&nbsp;if you're more than six feet tall, you might find that your head hits the ceiling when you try to relax back in your seat and use the head rest. Mind you, the flat floor and broad&nbsp;interior mean&nbsp;it's not too much of a squeeze for&nbsp;three adults sitting in the back.&nbsp;

Some rivals have a bigger boot, but there's still plenty of room for a family holiday. You&nbsp;get a small underfloor storage area for the charging cables, which is handy&nbsp;because, unlike the EV6 and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a>, the bZ4X has no extra storage under its bonnet.

Trims &amp; Equipment:&nbsp;Even entry-level Pure models are fairly well equipped, with 18in alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and start and a pre-conditioning system for the interior. You also get&nbsp;a heat pump to improve range in colder conditions – something that's optional from new on most competitors, including the EV6.&nbsp;

Stepping up to mid-spec Motion trim adds some visual enhancements, including a rear spoiler plus some genuinely useful kit, including&nbsp;rain-sensing wipers, an eight-way electrically adjustable and heated driver’s seat, rear privacy glass&nbsp;and a powered tailgate.

Top-spec Vision gets larger, 20in alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free powered tailgate and some other luxuries.&nbsp;

EX30

The Volvo EX30 is a comfy&nbsp;small electric SUV that's good value when buying used. Its interior technology&nbsp;can be&nbsp;frustrating, though.

Used Volvo EX30 2023-present

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/ex30/estate/review/n26262">Volvo EX30</a> is the fastest accelerating Volvo in history, which is pretty crazy when you consider its compact size. However, this small electric SUV isn’t just about performance, because it also focuses on style, comfort and sustainability.&nbsp;

When it arrived in 2023, the EX30 brought with it a new generation of Volvo design and technology. The exterior and interior look almost space-age, while most of the car’s interior functions are operated via a new Google-based infotainment system. It even features tech that’s been rolled out in larger Volvo models, such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/ex90/estate/review/n27061">Volvo EX90</a>.

Motors and batteries: Beneath its minimalist skin, the EX30 is very closely related to the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/smart/hashtag-1/hatchback/review/n25016">Smart #1</a>, with the two cars sharing the same underpinnings and similar motor and battery options.&nbsp;

The entry-level version of the EX30 is fast, to say the least, and it doesn’t feel ‘entry-level’ when it comes to performance. Called Single Motor, it can go from 0-62mph in 5.7sec, which is faster than all of its rivals, including the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/jeep/avenger/hatchback/review/n25706">Jeep Avenger Electric</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/kona/hatchback/review/n18164">Hyundai Kona Electric</a>. It’s even faster than a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/golf/hatchback/review/n149">Volkswagen Golf GTI</a> hot hatch.&nbsp;

The Single Motor car is powered by a 49kWh (usable capacity) battery that delivers an official range of 209 miles (expect between 150-170 in real-world driving). If you want more range, you can have a Single Motor Extended Range model, which gets a 65kWh battery that gives an official range of 295 miles (that’s farther than a #1 and Avenger can manage). This version is quicker too, with 0-62mph taking 5.3sec.

But what if that’s not quick enough? Well, you can have a Twin Motor Performance model that goes from 0-62mph in just 3.6sec. For reference, that’s quicker than a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/911/coupe/review/n98">Porsche 911</a> Carrera. Yes really. This version gets the same 65kWh battery as the Extended Range model, but because of its extra poke, it has a smaller official range of 279 miles.

Ride and handling: The EX30 pretty much hits the nail on the head when it comes to ride and handling. The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/types-of-suspension-adaptive-suspension-explained/n27085">suspension</a> is supple enough to take the sting out of most urban road imperfections, while the body feels taught and tied down, which helps it flow happily down a winding road. It’s more polished overall than an Avenger and Kona.

You might imagine the hilariously fast Twin Motor Performance would have a stiffer suspension set-up to help it carry more speed through corners, but surprisingly it doesn’t. It is a bit firmer than other versions because of the weight from the extra motor and battery, with a slightly choppier high-speed ride.

No matter the version you choose, we wouldn’t say the EX30 is fun to drive, even with the crazy performance on offer. The overly light steering doesn’t feel precise enough to inspire much confidence, even when in its heaviest setting. On the plus side, the brake pedal is nice and progressive, which makes it easy to stop smoothly. The brakes in the #1 are quite grabby by comparison.&nbsp;

Where the EX30 really impresses is with refinement, because this is an extremely hushed car to drive. Even at motorway speeds, hardly any wind and road noise enters the interior. It’s certainly a good option if you want an electric SUV that focuses on comfort and refinement.

Interior and practicality: The EX30’s interior is super minimalist, and while this does mean it looks super clean and modern, it does bring some issues with usability. All EX30s have a 12.3in touchscreen that controls nearly all of the car’s functions. For example, it houses your wiper and light controls, while your speed and driving info are squeezed onto the screen too (there’s no digital driver’s display). It’s a bit of a shame because the EX30’s interior is otherwise very pleasant.

On the plus side, the touchscreen is snappy and the graphics are crisp and clear. It also comes with Google Maps, Google Assistant and wireless <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a> as standard. Unfortunately <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194">Android Auto</a> isn’t available.

Material quality is very impressive, especially considering this is Volvo’s entry-level car. The door handles are made of metal and they have a heavy feel to them, plus the dashboard plastics have a nice grain to them. While they are hard and scratchy, they don’t feel as cheap as the plastics in the Avenger.&nbsp;

Interestingly, Volvo has made a particular focus on sustainability with the interior materials. Up to 17% of the plastics in the car (such as interior components and bumpers) are recycled, while the wool-blend seats contain up to 70% recycled polyester.

In terms of the driving position, it's easy enough to get comfortable behind the wheel – despite the annoyance of having to use the touchscreen to adjust the door mirrors. Space in the front is good too, thanks to plenty of head room and seats that slide back a long way back. A couple of six-footers will fit in the rear seats, where the head room is decent enough and leg room respectable, but you don’t get as much room in the back as a #1 or Kona Electric.

In the boot, the EX30 can carry up to 318 litres, which is noticeably bigger than the #1's boot. We managed to fit five <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/the-cars-with-the-biggest-boots/n18791">carry-on suitcases</a> below the parcel shelf, which is the same as the Avenger but one less than the Kona Electric. If you need more space, you can fold the rear seats in the 60/40 arrangement. Like the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev3/estate/review/n27102">Kia EV3</a>, the EX30 has a small storage area under the bonnet that’s just about big enough for the charging cable.

Trims and equipment: The entry-level Core version isn’t especially well equipped for the money. It’s only available on Single Motor and Extended Range versions and it gives you <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/what-is-cruise-control-and-should-you-have-it-on-your-next-car/n26822">adaptive cruise control</a>, front and rear parking sensors, and LED headlights.

The Plus model is much better equipped. It comes with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a powered tailgate, a Harmon Kardon sound system and wireless phone-charging. The range-topping Ultra trim gives you a few more extras, such as a panoramic glass roof, an <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/electric-car-heat-pump/n27141">EV heat pump</a> and electrically adjustable front seats.

Volvo EX30 Estate

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is a stylish, practical and plush electric SUV. Early versions are&nbsp;good value when buying used, too.

Used Volvo XC40 Recharge 2021-present

Many famous actors have changed their names in their careers, often to distinguish themselves from others with the same name. Think of David Tennant as an example; his given name was David MacDonald, but after finding out there was another actor with the same name, he created a new name so there was no confusion.&nbsp;

Similarly, the Volvo XC40 Recharge has undergone a name change in a bid to separate it from the popular petrol-powered <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc40/estate/review/n119">Volvo XC40</a>. Indeed, from 2024 onwards, the XC40 Recharge was renamed the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/ex40/estate/review/n22063">Volvo EX40</a>, so you might see a few used cars under this name plate too.

Confused? Hopefully not, but in this instance, we’ll refer to it as the XC40 Recharge for consistency. No matter the name, this <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-suvs/n23038">electric SUV</a> is an attractive used buy, especially against rivals such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q4/estate/review/n23194">Audi Q4 e-tron</a>, <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/genesis/gv60/estate/review/n24373">Genesis GV60</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-y/hatchback/review/n23624">Tesla Model Y</a>.

Motors and batteries: When the XC40 Recharge was launched in 2021, it was initially only available as a full-fat Twin model. It gets two electric motors (making it four-wheel drive) and 402bhp, which means 0-62mph takes a very un-Volvo 4.7sec. It’s also powered by a 78kWh total capacity battery, which allows for an official range of 274 miles. That’s less than what a Model Y Performance can manage (319 miles).

In 2022, a lesser powered version arrived in the form of the front-wheel drive Single Motor car. It produces 228bhp and delivers 0-62mph in 7.4sec, which is more than quick enough for most needs. It also gets a 69kWh battery for an official range of 262 miles, which is less than the GV60 RWD (321 miles).

In 2023, Volvo updated the motors and batteries. The Twin model received new motors and a larger 82kWh battery, which gave it a much better range of 332 miles. Meanwhile, the Single Motor car had its motor switched from the front to the rear axle, making it rear-wheel drive. Its battery capacity remained the same, but improvements to the efficiency of the motor boosted its range to 295 miles.&nbsp;

In 2024, Volvo added a new Single Motor Extended Range version to the lineup (along with the EX40 name change). It gets a slight bump in power to 249bhp, while a 78kWh battery delivers an official range of 341 miles. That’s farther than the Model Y Long Range (331 miles).

Ride and handling: The XC40 Recharge is a bit heavier than the regular XC40, and the ride suffers as a result. Don’t get us wrong; it’s not uncomfortable, but the extra weight of the battery pack puts more strain on the suspension, so it’s a little crashy along poorly surfaced roads. While a GV60 is more supple overall, the XC40 Recharge still beats the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix1/estate/review/n25005">BMW iX1</a> or <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/mustang-mach-e/estate/review/n22387">Ford Mustang Mach-E</a> for comfort.

Being fairly tall and heavy, the XC40 Recharge leans quite a bit through corners. It’s certainly more at home on the motorway, where the car is super quiet and refined to drive.&nbsp;

Unlike a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/id4/estate/review/n22789">VW ID 4</a> with its grabby brakes, the EX40 is easy to drive smoothly, especially around town. The brakes respond fairly consistently when you press the pedal, plus there's a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-one-pedal-driving-and-how-does-it-work/n27129">one-pedal driving</a> mode.

Interior and practicality: The XC40 Recharge has a fabulously high driving position, so you get a good view of the road ahead. Visibility is helped further by relatively slim windscreen pillars, large windows and big door mirrors.&nbsp;

Like most Volvos, the XC40 gets front seats that offer plenty of support. You also get loads of adjustment, plus the steering wheel moves for reach and rake. You won’t have much trouble getting comfortable behind the wheel.

In the centre of the dashboard, you’ll find a swish-looking 9.0in infotainment touchscreen that was co-developed with Google. As such, you’ll find sat-nav and voice control taken care of by Google Maps and Google Assistant, while Apple users can sync up their phone using <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a> if they'd prefer. There's no <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194">Android Auto</a>.

Unfortunately, the busy menu layout and tiny icons mean you have to take your eyes off the road for longer than is ideal when using the system. Overall, the systems in the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix3/4x4/review/n22236">BMW iX3</a> and GV60 are more intuitive, thanks to their mix of physical and touchscreen-based controls.

When it comes to interior quality, the XC40 Recharge is tough to beat. Pretty much everything you touch feels sumptuous and plush, while the build quality is impressive. It’s much better than the Q4 e-tron in this area and similar to the GV60.

In terms of space, you'll find plenty of head and leg room in the front, while tall adults will be able to sit comfortably in the back without their heads brushing the ceiling or their knees bashing the front seats. It’s not quite as spacious as a Model Y, but there’s not a lot in it.&nbsp;

If you want to fold the back seats down, the rear seatback splits in a 60/40 arrangement as opposed to the more versatile 40/20/40 configuration you get in top-spec versions of the Q4 e-tron.

In the boot, there’s 452 litres of space. While that’s not a huge amount on paper, we did manage to fit eight carry-on suitcases below the parcel shelf. For context, the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a> and Q4 e-tron swallowed seven cases, while the Model Y took 10 in total – including one in the front boot under the bonnet. The XC40 Recharge has storage space for the charging cable under the bonnet, but it's not big enough for a carry-on suitcase.

Trims and equipment: Volvo has regularly updated the trims for the XC40 Recharge over the years, so there are quite a few to choose from. Even so, the main trims you want to focus on are Core, Plus and Ultimate.&nbsp;

Entry-level Core trim gives you the basics, including 19in alloy wheels, climate control, cruise control, automatic wipers and rear parking sensors, while Plus adds keyless entry, heated and electrically adjustable front seats and a reversing camera. It also has a heat pump that improves the car's efficiency in cooler weather.

Range-topping Ultimate comes with ambient interior lighting, leather upholstery, an opening sunroof, a 360-degree camera, a Harman Kardon sound system and 20in alloy wheels. There are also First Edition and sporty R-Design models available, but these are harder to come by.&nbsp;
