The Lexus RX scores well for its economical engines, well-built interior and attractive pricing. Reliability will be a strong point too, and the option of a regular hybrid is great for those without easy access to a charger. That said, while plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW X5 and Range Rover Sport cost more, they can travel further on a full charge, have smoother engines and ride more comfortably.

This is the plushest trim level, with adaptive suspension, park assist, a 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system upgrade, a digital rear-view mirror, and electric adjustment for the front passenger seat and rear seats.

This is the entry-level hybrid option. It pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with two electric motors to produce a combined output of 247bhp, for 0-62mph in 7.9sec.
