The Toyota Yaris Hybrid has some important strengths, not least its superb fuel economy, excellent reliability and generous standard kit. However, it can’t match the VW Polo for interior quality or ride comfort, and it's pretty cramped inside, especially compared with the Honda Jazz. The entry-level engine and mid-spec Design trim will suit most buyers' needs.

Second-rung Design trim adds LED headlights, rear electric windows, an 8.0in touchscreen and rear privacy glass for a reasonable premium over Icon. It's worth considering.

Its 0-60mph time – 9.7 seconds – won’t set any lap records, but this regular hybrid petrol engine is super-economical. It doesn't struggle to get up to motorway speeds but is noisy if you put your foot down to get there.
