First and foremost, the Skoda Octavia offers generous space for occupants and a bigger boot than most competitors from the class above, plus its plush interior and frugal engines make it a fantastic car for covering big distances in. The 1.5-litre TSI 150 petrol engine with well-equipped SE L trim is our pick of the range.

This higher spec Octavia builds on SE Technology trim by adding 17in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, ambient lighting, keyless entry, a heated front windscreen and adaptive cruise control.

This is the entry-level diesel engine, fitted with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor that develops 114bhp and 221lb ft of torque. That’s enough for a 0-62mph time of 10.0sec and a top speed of 132mph. It comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.
