First and foremost, the Skoda Octavia offers generous space for occupants and a bigger boot than most competitors from the class above, plus its plush interior and frugal engines make it a fantastic car for covering big distances in. The 1.5-litre TSI 150 petrol engine with well-equipped SE L trim is our pick of the range.

This is the entry-level trim for the Octavia and comes with plenty of kit, including 16in alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated front seats, keyless ignition, a 10.3in digital instrument panel, a 13in touchscreen, dual-zone climate control and cruise control.

This is the most powerful diesel engine available and it only comes with a seven-speed automatic gearbox. Power increases to 148bhp, while torque rises to 266lb ft, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 8.5sec and a top speed 147mph.
