The Renault Rafale impresses when it comes to standard equipment, interior quality and efficiency, but it's not as sharp to drive or comfortable as some of its less-expensive rivals. If you do buy one, we recommend going for the Hybrid 200 in entry-level Techno trim – although company car drivers will be better off with the PHEV version.

The Hybrid 200 engine’s entry-level trim comes with 20in alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, matrix LED headlights, ambient lighting and fabric upholstery. If you’re buying the Hybrid 200, we’d recommend sticking to this trim.

Combining a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors, the Full Hybrid engine gives you plenty of oomph for everyday driving, getting you from 0-62mph faster than the Peugeot 408 Hybrid. It should also be efficient, managing up to 60.1mpg, but its automatic gearbox can be quite slow to change gears though.
