The Peugeot 408 is plush inside and fairly well equipped. The closely-related Citroën C5 X is more comfortable and cheaper to buy, but the 408 is sharper to drive and the ride is far from harsh. What’s more, the plug-in hybrid 408's slightly longer electric range makes it a better choice for company car buyers. The entry-level Hybrid 136 engine makes the most sense for private buyers, and we recommend Allure trim.

Range-topping GT trim is the most expensive in the line-up, but does get a lot of (non-essential) luxuries. That includes a heated steering wheel, a power-assisted tailgate, matrix LED headlights, fancier materials inside and ambient interior lighting.

This is your entry-level option. It consists of a 1.2-litre petrol engine and an electric motor (for a total power output of 134bhp) but uses 48V technology (like a mild hybrid) – it can’t run on electric power alone for very long. Still, it’s punchy enough and the natural choice for private buyers.
