The MG S5 EV is a significant step forward over its predecessor in almost every area, but the range-topping Long Range Trophy we’ve driven doesn’t deliver the same mind-blowing value we’ve come to associate with the brand. Instead, we suspect the entry-level Standard Range SE will be the smarter buy if outright range isn’t a priority. For less than the price of a Jeep Avenger Electric, you’re getting a car that’s closer in size to a Skoda Elroq, well-equipped, neatly finished inside and backed by a seven-year warranty.

There’s a sizeable jump up in price from SE to Trophy but you do benefit from bigger 18in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, power folding door mirrors, heated and electrically adjustable leather seats, rain-sensing wipers, a mobile phone bluetooth key, a heated steering wheel, rear reading lights, six-speaker audio system (up from four-speakers), a 360-degree parking camera and a wireless phone-charger.

The Long Range gets a 61.7kWh battery, a stronger 228bhp motor, and a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds. That’s quicker than any Kia EV3 or Renault Scenic and keeps pace with the range-topping Elroq 85.
