The latest Mercedes SL trades the previous version's slightly dumpy looks and handling for something more aggressive. It's still more of a grand tourer than a sports car, but is now extremely composed, and with its extra dose of practicality it’s more versatile than ever.
The range-topper features a 604bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, a 200bhp electric motor and a 4.8kWh battery, allowing for 0-62mph in a scarcely believable 2.9 seconds (top speed is 197mph).
