The Mazda CX-5 can still compete with fresher-faced family SUVs when it comes to interior quality, refinement and practicality. It's also well priced and generously equipped, but its lacklustre petrol engines and slightly dated interior mean there are stronger rivals around. The 2.0 petrol with entry-level Centre-Line trim offers the best value for money, but the diesel is well worth a look if you do above-average mileage.

If you’re after all of the bells and whistles, you’ll want top-spec Takumi because it comes with luxuries including Nappa leather seats, Adaptive LED headlights, a 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats and a Driver Assistance Pack.

The most powerful petrol engine may have 191bhp but it's not that much faster than the entry-level engine. It does, however, drink more fuel so we don’t think it’s worth the extra investment. If four-wheel drive and the off-road mode are important to you, you’ll have to go with this one.
