This entry-level diesel is powered by a 3.3-litre six-cylinder engine developing 197bhp and 332lb ft of torque. It sends power to the rear wheels and gets from 0-62mph in 8.4sec; it's slower than most rivals, but still provides as much performance as you're likely to need.

So, while many car makers have moved to smaller turbocharged engines, Mazda instead offers larger motors that are still efficient. For example, the entry-level petrol option in the Mazda 3 is a 2.0-litre unit –&nbsp;far larger than what you’ll find in most rivals – but it remains very clean.

3.3d 200 Exclusive-Line 5dr Auto

The CX-60 combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 323bhp. Power is sent to all four wheels and an eight speed automatic gearbox. This is good for a 0-62mph time of 5.8sec. It's far from the cheapest plug-in hybrid for company car tax, though, and it's too expensive to recommend for private buyers.

This is the most powerful diesel engine and comes with four-wheel drive as standard. With 251bhp and 405lb ft of torque, this gets from 0-62mph in 7.4sec and on to a top speed of 136mph.

The sportier mid-range model adds larger 20in wheels, body-coloured wheelarches and a gloss-black front grille. Inside, it adds ambient lighting, electrically adjustable front seats that are heated and ventilated, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system.
