The Ford Focus family car has sharp handling, a comfortable ride and good refinement, but the engine range is a bit limited and some rivals are more competitively priced. If you do buy one, we recommend going for the entry-level 1.0 Ecoboost 125 mHEV in Titanium trim – although handling is even better on ST-Line versions, which have stiffer suspension.

This trim adds 17in wheels (different to ST-Line’s), a B&O premium audio system, wireless charging and a digital driver’s display. There’s also a heating function for the front seats and steering wheel.

This is the engine to go for if you want more potent performance. It has 153bhp and sprints from 0-62mph in 8.4sec and comes with a seven-speed automatic gearbox.
