The Ford Focus Estate stands out as the best-handling family wagon, complemented by a decent ride, generous passenger space and a large boot possessed of some handy design features. Just bear in mind that the interior feels distinctly low rent and the seating isn't as versatile as some of its rivals'.

This trim lets you make the most of the Focus's great handling characteristics without paying the premium cost of the Focus ST hot hatch. Like Active, it gets most of the same equipment as the Titanium trim but adds 17in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, sportier styling, and lowered and stiffened suspension, making for a more dynamic drive.

Fine for town work, but the 125 will feel overwhelmed out of town with a car full of people and their luggage.
