The model
Read full New Ford Explorer reviewThe Ford Explorer is better to drive than its Volkswagen ID 4 sister, plus its interior offers more wow factor and our favourite version can cover more than 300 miles between charges in real-world conditions. If you value comfort and quality, though, the Renault Scenic is more likely to appeal – especially given that it’s currently cheaper to buy and doesn’t sacrifice range.
The trim
See full equipmentEven entry-level Select trim comes very well equipped; you get heated front seats – plus, electric adjustment and a massage function for the driver – a heated steering wheel, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, and a 14.6in touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The engine
See full engine specsIn this twin-motor form, the Explorer has four-wheel drive (lesser models are rear-wheel drive) and can dispatch the benchmark 0-62mph sprint in just 5.3sec. However, the official range isn’t quite as impressive as the Extended Range RWD car’s: 329 miles versus as much as 374 miles. A 10-80% top-up is possible in 26 minutes if you can find a charger capable of delivering electricity at the car’s maximum rate of 185kW.
