If you value comfort and quality, though, the Renault Scenic is more likely to appeal – especially given that it’s currently cheaper to buy and doesn’t sacrifice range.

See full equipmentRange-topping Premium trim brings ambient interior lighting, a powered tailgate, a panoramic glass sunroof, 20in alloy wheels (instead of 19s) and Matrix LED headlights which can remain on high beam without dazzling other drivers. However, the price of the Explorer starts to look a bit punchy.
The engine
See full engine specsWhile it’s not as fast as the AWD version of the Explorer, the Extended Range RWD can still get from 0-62mph in a very respectable 6.4sec. What’s more, it can go farther between charges: 374 miles in Select trim, or 354 miles on the bigger alloy wheels that you get with range-topping Premium trim. A 10-80% top-up is possible in 28 minutes if you can find a suitably powerful public rapid charger.
