The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/cayenne/4x4/used-review/n907">Porsche Cayenne</a> has incredible performance, on top of which it’s refined, handles well and even has fairly flexible rear seating. You’ll need deep pockets to keep it on the road, mind.

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/land-rover/range-rover-sport/4x4/used-review/n17571">Range Rover Sport</a> is a quiet cruiser with a classy, roomy interior and a comfortable ride. Countered against that, its reliability record isn’t one of the best and it is expensive to buy used.

What is it like?

On the whole this is an impressively robust car, with very few reported problems. There have been reports of electrical gremlins, mostly relating to starting, battery life, air-con and sat-nav issues and electrical warning lights.

The current BMW X6 finished mid-table in the What Car? 2017 Reliability Survey, so with few reported problems with this older model we would expect it to have fared about the same in terms of comparative reliability. BMW as a brand fared similarly, with a performance that put it 17th out of the 32 manufacturers included. That means it’s behind Audi, but ahead of Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Volvo and Land Rover.

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the M8&nbsp;grand tourer, which costs more than £120,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has ten in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and XM, plus the electric iX3 and iX.

All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Used BMW X6 2008 - 2014

Quite a lot. The 30d is the most economical version, with a claimed average fuel consumption of 47.1mpg, and the 40d a claimed 45.6mpg, but you won’t see anything like those figures in real-world use. Tax, annual vehicle excise duty (VED), will be high for all models.

Insurance groups range from a high 42 to a higher 47. Servicing will be expensive at BMW main dealers, but service plans are available to help spread the cost on the most recent versions of this generation. There are plenty of independent BMW specialists who will take on the work at a reduced cost over the main dealers.

It’s possible to buy an early X6 from around £13,000, but it’s likely to be a high mileage affair. Up the dosh to between £15,000 and £17,000 and you’ll find good, average mileage for year 2008/2009 cars with a full service history, from an independent dealer. Between £18,000 and £20,000 will net you 2010 and 2011 cars with the same criteria, while £20,000 to £25,000 should get you late 2012 cars from franchised dealers.

The entry-level diesel is the 30d. It has six cylinders and feels suitably muscular at low revs, yet is no slouch when pushed hard. As the best blend of price, performance and running costs, it’s the one we’d pick.

However, there are two further diesels should you want even more performance. First is the 40d, which is based on the same engine as the 30d but adds more power and torque. That means a quicker sprint time, but also worse official fuel economy.

At the top of the range sits the M50d, which gets the same engine but with a triple-stage turbocharger that brings great performance at the expense of economy.

We define a large SUV as anything longer than 4.5 metres. These cars aren’t usually particularly cheap to buy or lease, so in return we expect a roomy cabin, a lengthy list of standard equipment and excellent cruising refinement.

A few models in this class are two-wheel drive, but the vast majority have four-wheel drive for at least a modicum of off-road ability.

Large SUV

Being such a wide car it’s susceptible to scuffs and scratches on the body panels and alloy wheels, so check these. Include the roof in your inspection, just in case it has been used to carry bicycles or a roof box.

For a select few, the BMW X5 is a decent enough thing, but it isn’t quite as leery as it could be. Enter the BMW X6, a car that takes all the good things the X5 offers and cloaks it in a body of uncompromising outlandishness and daunting physical presence.

In fact, it’s the design that divides opinion most about this car, rather than its sheer size, which is even wider than the X5, an already perilously wide thing indeed. However, if you can put aside issues of style and matters of taste, the X6 is not a bad SUV, even if you must accept that while it is larger than the X5 on the outside it actually has less space on the inside, such is the price you must pay on the altar of design.

Underneath its unsubtle bonnet is the usual range of punchy BMW engines. The first of the diesels is the 30d. It has six cylinders and feels suitably muscular at low revs, although there are two further diesels should you want even more get-up-and-go. First is the 40d, which adds more power and torque, and at the top of the range sits the swift M50d, with a triple-stage turbocharger. The least popular engine in terms of sales is undoubtedly the 4.4-litre turbocharged 50i V8 petrol, which is a shame. It’s brilliantly smooth and has no problems catapulting the vast X6 down the road.

On the road the X6’s ride is rather firm and a little unsettled, which means that it’s not the most comfortable car on journeys long or short. However, the flipside of this is unusually sharp handling for such a large and heavy SUV, helped by quick steering and plenty of four-wheel drive grip.

Perhaps predictably, the X6’s interior is borrowed wholesale from the X5, and it’s none the worse for that. The dashboard, centre console and front seats are all the same, and it all feels well assembled and the materials used of a good quality. It has BMW’s excellent iDrive infotainment system controller and space up front is fine, although taller passengers will find the two rear seats short of head room, due to car’s sloping rear roof line.

So, if you can accept the large external dimensions and the limited interior space and the poor ride, the X6 is a sharp-handling and intriguing proposition. It won’t be cheap to buy or to own even used, but it will certainly cut a large dash in the urban cut and thrust of the school run.
