The BMW iX1 is a practical choice and its performance is impressive, especially if you go for the four-wheel-drive version, the xDrive30. However, it's let down by a firm ride and so-so range between charges. Put simply, there are better electric SUVs available for the money. If you do buy an iX1, the xLine trim makes the most sense while the eDrive20 model has the longest electric range.

xLine is well equipped, with adaptive suspension, cruise control, a digital driver display, all-round parking sensors and a reversing camera. Crucially, it also comes with smaller wheels that improve ride quality.

This is the entry-level option for the iX1 and has one electric motor driving the front wheels. Power output is 201bhp, giving a 0-62mph of 8.6 seconds.
