The Audi A5 looks sportier than the A4 it replaces but at its core it remains a comfortable, practical and well-rounded executive cruiser. However, its interior no longer leads the class – the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series Gran Coupé have now taken that crown.

Our favourite trim comes with 18in alloy wheels, softer and more comfortable suspension, LED headlights, leather trim, heated front seats, adjustable lumbar support, three-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, ambient interior lighting, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, cruise control, wireless phone-charging, an eight-speaker stereo, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, sat-nav, a 10.1in infotainment screen and four USB ports.

This has 161bhp and is our pick of the range. It has plenty of low-down punch so you can tootle around town effortlessly, as well as the outright pace to whisk you up to motorway speeds effectively (0-62mph takes a very respectable 8.4sec). It can also manage nearly 60mpg when you drive it carefully and is quieter than some petrol engines.
