Comfortable, enjoyable to drive and sufficiently spacious inside for most part, the Audi A3 is as good as ever – better even, now that a facelift has brought the level of interior quality up. The Sport 35 TFSI version is the best of the bunch, with higher-end engine and trim combos pushing the price too far up to recommend.

Our pick of the trims is entry-level Sport, which includes cruise control, three-zone air conditioning, heated front seats, power-folding door mirrors, 17in alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Think of this as the 35 TFSI’s diesel cousin. It too has 148bhp and delivers similar performance. Its extra low-down shove makes it a stronger motorway machine but we’d still recommend the 35 TFSI, which is cheaper to buy.
