While the Suzuki Vitara comes with loads of standard kit and efficient engines, many of its rivals don’t cost that much more but are better to drive, more spacious inside and feel more upmarket. If you do get one, we recommend entry-level SZ-T trim and the mild-hybrid engine for the best value.

Upgrading to the Vitara SZ5 doesn’t add too much to the price tag but does add the sliding panoramic roof that limits head room. On top of that, you also get 17in alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, suede interior trim, electronically folding wing mirrors and built-in sat-nav.

Only available with an automatic gearbox, and its slow responses are a pain on the open road. Its increased efficiency over the sweet little 1.4 isn’t worth the additional cost.
