The Volkswagen Touran is roomy, practical, very well built and good to drive. It's a bit more expensive than the Citroën C4 Grand Spacetourer, but worth the extra – especially when you factor in the huge discounts that are available. The 1.5 TSI 150 petrol provides good performance balanced with reasonable running costs.

This recommendable trim gains you a panoramic sunroof, speed limit recognition, blinds on the rear windows, remotely activated rear-door child locks and a voice amplification function for the driver – it uses the microphone in the front to project the driver’s voice through the rear speakers, so the driver doesn’t have to shout to be heard by people in the rearmost seats.

This 148bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is the pick of the range, offering plenty of performance for a lower price than the 2.0 TDI 150 diesel. It'll revs freely and hits 0-62mph in 8.9sec and officially returns over 40mpg.
