Used Vauxhall Grandland X 2018-present reliability
Category: Family SUV
The Vauxhall Grandland X ticks the practicality and comfort boxes rather well, and all for a reasonably low price. There are nicer family SUVs to drive, though
What should I look for in a used Vauxhall Grandland X hatchback?
When you go to view a Grandland X, have a play around with its infotainment system. Not just to learn how to operate it, but to make sure that it works as it should and doesn’t freeze or crash. If it does, the system might require an update.
Some of the most lavishly specced cars have larger 19in alloy wheels that could be susceptible to kerb damage. On examples without front parking sensors, be sure to check the front bumper for scrapes. Also, since this is a family car, check that there aren’t any stains on the seats or carpet and that the interior plastics are in good order.
Also, the emergency roadside assistance, WiFi and concierge service, called OnStar, will cease to provide services from 31 December 2020. This is because OnStar is a service provided by the American company General Motors, who no longer own Vauxhall. Current customers of this platform will be able to continue using it up until this date, but no subscriptions can be purchased afterwards.
What are the most common problems with a used Vauxhall Grandland X hatchback?
Engine piston failure
This recall relates to engine pistons that might not be up to specification. They therefore allow oil to enter the inlet circuit, and this could in extreme circumstances lead to increased engine revs for a few seconds and possible total engine failure. Dealers will replace the engine if necessary.
Side airbag might fail to deploy
Examples fitted with leather seats had an issue where the stitching wouldn’t separate correctly to allow the seat-mounted airbag to deploy in an emergency. Affected vehicles are to be inspected by a Vauxhall dealer and have modified seat covers fitted to solve the problem.
Oil plug leak
There’s the potential for 2018 model year cars to develop an oil leak from a cylinder block oil plug. In a worst-case scenario, this can allow the engine to run low of oil. Contact your local Vauxhall dealer and provide them with your car's chassis number for them to check if the vehicle needs any remedial work.
High diesel particulate emissions
Some Grandland X models fitted with a diesel engine may emit higher particulate emissions than they should. This applies to examples made between 20 February 2018 and 27 June 2018, and may require either a new diesel particulate filter or some control software to be updated. Your dealer will be able to let you know if work is required.
Centre rear seat belt
The central seat belt on a small number of examples made specifically on 1 June 2019 may not have been fastened down correctly at the factory, and this could lead to an increased risk of injury in a collision. Your local Vauxhall dealer will be able to inform you if your particular car is affected and sort the problem for you, free of charge.
Is a used Vauxhall Grandland X hatchback reliable?
Vauxhall as a brand finished in 27th place out of 31 car manufacturers, which is a much worse result than for rivals such as Volkswagen and Ford.
