The Corolla Commercial is a unique proposition: it’s cheap to run thanks to its hybrid engine, practical, and more comfortable to drive than many of its van-based rivals. And for those reasons, it's the best car-derived van you can buy.

The trim

This range-topping trim is too pricey for us to recommend, although it adds part-leather seats and bigger (18in) alloys to everything that comes with cheaper Design trim.

The engine

In many ways, this is the best version of the Corolla, because its 177bhp 2.0-litre hybrid is much punchier than the cheaper 1.8 and responds more eagerly when you squeeze its accelerator pedal. However, it's a pity you end up with a much smaller boot.
