The Volvo V40 Cross Country is essentially a small hatchback with a few tweaks to turn it into an SUV that's aimed at the likes of the Audi Q3 and BMW X1.
It is supposedly aimed at adventurous car buyers, and offers extra plastic protection and slightly increased ground clearance.
However, only the top of the range petrol model comes with four-wheel drive; the rest of models are much the same as the standard V40. This means you can get CO2 emissions of just 99g/km from the 1.6-litre D2 diesel.
The V40 Cross Country will cost you an extra 1000 over the standard V40.
We invited What Car? readers to an exclusive preview event in West London to see whether they felt the changes justified the price increase.
