Used test: BMW 5 Series vs Jaguar XF costs
Pick up either of these two luxury saloons at six years old and you'll save around £30,000 off its price when new, but should you go BMW 5 Series or Jaguar XF?

When new, both these models came in at a little less than £50,000. After six years, the BMW 5 Series can now be picked up for around £23,000, and the Jaguar XF a few grand less at around £20,000. Keep in mind that we're taking the respective specifications of our two test cars into account.

The 530d should prove cheaper in fuel: it officially averages 53.2mpg, beating the XF's 51.4mpg figure. If you're looking at 2017 examples (like the ones we have here), it's likely they'll have been registered after April of that year, making annual road tax £165 no matter which of the two cars you choose.
They will cost similar amounts to insure, with the 530d in group 41 and the XF S in group 42, meaning fees of around £1015 and £1033 respectively. For a service of the 530d through BMW we were quoted £433. The XF proves quite pricy with Jaguar at £1367 for one service.

Our 2022 What Car? Reliability Survey showed the 5 Series to more reliable. In diesel form, the model came seventh out of 10 cars in the luxury car class, while the petrol/diesel XF placed eighth. As brands, BMW ranked 16th out of 32 manufacturers featured. Jaguar didn't do as well, coming 26th.
Both cars are tested here in their range-topping trims, so there’s been no scrimping on luxuries. You get 19in alloys, climate control, heated leather seats, automatic xenon headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and front and rear parking sensors. The XF adds keyless entry. Automatic emergency braking (AEB) came as standard from new on both cars (to stop you accidentally running into the car in front). During crash-testing, both cars earned a five-star rating from Euro NCAP.
