Following the announcement that the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/petrol-diesel-car-ban/n23064">ban on new petrol and diesel car sales will be delayed</a>, we've taken a look at the best cars you don't have to plug in.

While a lot&nbsp;of the models being launched right now are&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric</a>, there are still plenty of great petrol, diesel and even&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/hybrid-cars/n17013">hybrid cars</a>&nbsp;on sale that don't require you to faff around with power cables.

Here we've ranked the top 50. So, what's on the list? And what's number one?

Top 50 non-electric cars

Hatchback

Peugeot has its strongest model line-up for some years, with some of its cars now rated by our testers as being among the very best available.

Highlights focus around the firm’s newest SUVs, the 3008 and 5008. The 5008 was named Large SUV of the Year at the 2018 What Car? Awards, thanks to its appealing blend of space, interior quality and low running costs.

That bodes well for future launches, too, because many of the learnings from these cars will be passed on as new versions of existing cars are launched – something that could take many years, because the Peugeot range is so big, ranging from an entry-level supermini with the 108 to an executive saloon with the 508, up into the SUV range and also vans.

Buyers should evaluate some of the lower-rated cars in the range more carefully, though. Some are now quite old, and are subsequently left behind in terms of quality when compared with the opposition, making them below-average buys, in our estimation.

PEUGEOT

The 208 is one of the best small hatchbacks on sale today, particularly if comfort is high on your priority list.

Yes, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/fiesta/hatchback/review/n106">Ford Fiesta</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/seat/ibiza/hatchback/review/n17359">Seat Ibiza</a>&nbsp;deliver sharper handling and cost less to buy, but the 208 offers a more cosseting ride and quieter cruising manners. And similarly, if you value a classy, well-built interior that provides decent interior space, it won’t disappoint.

As a bonus, the 1.2 Puretech 100 petrol engine is a punchy performer that doesn’t drink a lot of fuel. We’d recommend Allure Premium+ trim, which brings smarter styling, a handy reversing camera and built-in sat-nav.

50: Peugeot 208

If you want a new car but would rather not spend much, Dacia is a great place to start your search.

This budget brand builds some of Britain’s cheapest new cars, including the Sandero hatchback. And don’t think cheap automatically means corners have been cut, because the Sandero has been commended at the annual What Car? Car of the Year awards on numerous occasions.

Other Dacia models include the&nbsp;higher-riding Sandero Stepway, seven-seat Jogger, and rugged Duster SUV. And while these cost slightly more than the Sandero, they’re still priced aggressively enough that they’re really only competing directly with used cars.

Dacia manages this by borrowing mechanicals and technology from its owner, Renault, to minimise development costs.

Like all <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/new-car-deals/make/dacia">Dacia</a> models, the Jogger is very aggressively priced, but don’t think that means it’s full of compromises.

As a people mover, it’s well thought out, with genuine seven-seat usability, decent driving dynamics and plenty of standard equipment. Indeed, even entry-level versions have cruise control, electric front windows and air conditioning, although we’d recommend going for Expression trim; it adds lots of handy kit without costing vastly more.

The 109bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine is our pick; it’s punchy enough for most situations and much cheaper than the more powerful hybrid. Only a poor Euro NCAP safety score lets the Jogger down.

Estate

Toyota is a company undergoing a quiet revolution, as it works hard to replace its sensible but somewhat bland reputation with one for being a bit more daring, in areas such as the styling of its cars and its enthusiastic leadership of cutting-edge technology, such as hybrid systems.

That process seems to be working for buyers, with the hugely popular and striking-looking C-HR SUV in particular attracting a great deal of interest. The latest version of the hybrid Prius is also rated highly by What Car?; it’s the first Prius to go on sale that our testers have felt can truly compete all round with existing petrol or diesel rivals.

However, it’s worth noting that this period of transition is also a work in progress, and that many of the firm’s cars are still rated as being no more than average among class rivals by our testers.

The Yaris Cross makes a strong case for itself against the crowd of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/small-suvs/n17050">small SUVs</a>, especially if your top priorities are reliability and low running costs. It’s the most economical car we’ve ever put through our&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/truempg/mpg-calculator">True MPG</a>&nbsp;fuel economy test, and Toyota consistently performs well in our annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/2022-what-car-reliability-survey/n23397">Reliability Survey</a>.

Inside, the Yaris Cross is solidly built and the controls are instinctive to find and use on the move. And while seeing out of the back can be tricky, a rear-view camera is standard to help with parking.

There’s enough room in the back seats for a pair of six-footers, and the 500-litre boot is decent; we fitted seven carry-on cases beneath the parcel shelf.

48: Toyota Yaris Cross

Audi is a brand that sets the standard for interior quality, and this, combined with its vast and ever-growing model line-up, has helped it become one of the ‘big three’ German prestige car makers, along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The A3 hatchback, A4 executive saloon and Q7 SUV are all common - yet upmarket - sights on UK roads.

At least some of Audi's success over the past 30 years can be attributed to the growth in sales of vehicles with four-wheel drive; the company arguably led the way in bringing 4x4 technology into the mainstream, with its Quattro coupé in the early 1980s.

Today, most Audis are available with at least the option of four-wheel drive, while the list of SUVs from the brand includes the Q2, Q3, Q5 and Q7.

The Audi Q2 was one of the first cars to add a premium badge to the fashionable small SUV formula. It’s a tidy handler, too, and the 35 TFSI petrol engine delivers peppy performance.

However, it’s the quality of the interior that really sets it apart from the competition; the materials used feel great, and the switches and buttons operate with a precise, satisfying click.

The Q2 also has one of the best infotainment systems around – better even than those in bigger, more expensive Audi SUVs. And while you’ll pay more for the Q2 than you would for most rivals, it compensates by holding onto its value very well.

The VW Group famously spends more money on research and development than any rival – and as a result, perhaps it should be no surprise that our testers rate its cars so consistently highly.

The fact that many of those cars use the same underpinnings also helps, because it means that if they get it right once, they have the foundations to keep on getting it right.

However, the Volkswagen brand faces plenty of tough competition, often from within, because the rapidly rising Seat and Skoda brands that are also part of the group have access to the same technology.

VOLKSWAGEN

The VW T-Cross is exactly what many small SUV buyers are looking for: it’s comfortable and easy to drive, with a raised driving position – without feeling like a wallowy barge to drive.

It’s versatile, too. With the sliding rear bench in its rearmost position, there’s more space in the back for six-footers than in many rivals. Or, with the bench fully forwards, the boot is almost as big as some much larger&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/family-suvs/n17116">family SUVs</a>’.

Finally, the T-Cross's running costs are regardless of whether you’re a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-company-cars/n22605">company car</a>&nbsp;driver or a private buyer, and it comes loaded with safety kit. Only the hard interior plastics disappoint.

46: Volkswagen T-Cross

Land Rover is synonymous with SUVs, and especially with the Defender – the rugged runabout that has seen service in war zones across the world, but also as part of the Queen’s personal garage.

If off-road prowess is one of Land Rover’s core values, though, the other is luxury. Indeed, the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar are among the best luxury SUVs you can buy.

The Discovery, meanwhile, is a practical rival for the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, while the stylish Evoque (which is available as a three-door convertible as well as a traditional SUV) goes head to head with Audi’s Q3 and BMW’s X1.

In the coming years, we’ll see a new road-biased ‘Road Rover’ as well as an all-new Defender.

LAND ROVER

DEFENDER

Like its historic namesake, the latest Land Rover Defender is incredible off road (especially with the optional locking rear differential), but it’s how this&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/luxury-suvs/n17036">luxury SUV</a>&nbsp;blends that talent with fine on-road manners that puts it in a class of its own.

There’s plenty of choice, too; you can pick any of three body lengths, offering seats for five to eight people. Our favourite is the biggest model, which is called the 130. Yes, it’s the most expensive, but adults will be comfortable in all three rows, whereas the rearmost seats in the shorter 110 are distinctly cramped. The three-door 90, meanwhile, has a very small boot.

In many ways, modern Bentleys offer the best of both worlds, blending traditional British craftsmanship with modern mechanicals developed with the help of the company’s owner, Volkswagen.

The Bentayga SUV, for example, is closely related to Audi’s brilliantly engineered Q7 (another VW Group car). Yet the Bentayga still feels every inch a Bentley, thanks to its hand-finished interior and sonorous V8 engine.

Other Bentleys you can buy today include the Flying Spur&nbsp;saloon&nbsp;and the Continental GT coupé and convertible.

The Continental GT channels the spirit of a bygone age, when the elite would blast across Europe to relax on the Riviera, but this is a thoroughly modern machine that finds a delicious balance between power and luxury.

As you’d expect, just about everything is trimmed with polished wood or soft leather, and the quality of the fixtures and fittings is exemplary. But it’s also surprisingly practical, with space for adults in the back. We’d take the ‘entry-level’ V8 version over the flagship W12, because it handles better and sounds terrific.

Much like its predecessors, the latest Discovery is a whopping great 4x4 that feels at home both on road and off it. However, the latest generation is much classier inside and better to drive.

Perhaps its strongest suit of all, though, is practicality. The sheer width of the Discovery makes sitting three abreast in its second row comfortable for all concerned. What’s more, there are no lumps in the floor to rob passengers of foot space, and even tall adults will be happy in the third row.

Some rivals that are even higher on this list offer sharper handling, though, and many are from brands with better reliability records than Land Rover.

Hyundai has transformed itself from a maker of oddball hatchbacks that sold in small numbers in the UK, to a major rival to the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

The Korean firm’s Ioniq Hybrid is particularly impressive, having beaten the trend-setting Toyota Prius when we tested the cars back to back.

Meanwhile, at the extremes of the Hyundai range you find the tiny i10 city car – a four-time What Car? award winner – and the stylish yet family-friendly Santa Fe SUV.

As a bonus, all of these cars come with the reassurance of a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, whereas most of Hyundai’s rivals offer only three years and 60,000 miles of cover.

If you’re shopping for a family SUV that can handle a tall family of four, you should take a look at the Hyundai&nbsp;Tucson.

Six-footers will have plenty of room, whether they’re in the front or the back, and the boot is cavernous. Meanwhile, quality also impresses; the plastics are soft and dense where it counts, and the buttons have a precise feel to them.

There’s a plug-in hybrid version, but we prefer the regular hybrid because it’s significantly cheaper and still impressively frugal. Just bear in mind that some family SUVs ride and handle better than the Tucson, including the closely related&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/sportage/4x4/review/n17352">Kia Sportage</a>.

This classy small hatchback is available with a broad range of petrol engines, but we reckon the 1.0 TSI 95 strikes the best balance between performance and affordability.

The Polo also has an upmarket-feeling interior that’s well equipped even in entry-level Life trim. And few&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/small-cars/n16997">small cars</a>&nbsp;are as good at soaking up bumps in the road or do a better job of suppressing wind and road noise on the motorway.

Previously, the Polo was beaten by its Seat Ibiza sister car because it couldn’t justify its higher price, but impressive deals and monthly finance rates mean that’s no longer the case.

41: Volkswagen Polo

One of the greatest success stories in the car world of recent decades is Skoda’s rise to become a hugely credible mainstream maker of good-value, good-sense cars.

Central to that success has been its place within the VW Group, alongside the Volkswagen brand itself, plus the likes of Seat and Audi. That has given it access to exactly the same underpinnings for its cars as the other brands, and it has complemented this by adding its own developments, from the way the cars drive and ride through to the features they have and the pricing.

The result is a range that extends from a city car to a large executive saloon, with family and large seven-seat SUVs too. There’s a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines, all of which are competitive for the class.

As a result, Skoda has a range of cars that is almost entirely class-leading or among the class leaders, and it has enjoyed long-time success at the What Car? Awards as a result.

If the seven-seat SUVs on this list so far have been on the pricey side for you, this one could be right up your street.

Like most Skodas, the Kodiaq is great value for money, especially if you stick with the lower engines and trims. Our favourite, the 1.5-litre petrol, is among the cheapest in the range yet provides all the pep you could reasonably want – even if you plan on filling every seat.

Speaking of seats, front and second-row passengers get plenty of space, and while those in the third row would be better off in the rival Peugeot 5008, most people will be happy enough to sit back there on a shorter trip.

With its three rows of seats, the Touran can match the seven-seat flexibility of bigger MPVs, including the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/galaxy/mpv/review/n142">Ford Galaxy</a>. There’s space for adults in all seats, and you can fold down some or all of the seatbacks to create a vast load bay.

So far, so practical – but the Touran’s main party piece is combining all that practicality with tidy handling and a supple ride. Its relatively compact exterior dimensions help it to feel much like a hatchback from behind the wheel.

Yes, this is a car that exists to carry lots of people and provide an abundance of functionality, but that doesn’t define the way it drives at all.

Buyers seeking value for money should have Kia towards the top of their shopping list.

Although once a niche brand in the UK, today Kia outsells many more established brands, helped by its market-leading seven-year warranty and a strong reputation for reliability; in fact, Kia regularly finishes towards the top of our reliability surveys.

There are plenty of models to choose from, too, ranging from the small Picanto city car to the Ceed family hatchback and the Sorento large SUV. The Picanto was the first Kia to win its class at the What Car? Car of the Year awards.

You also get the reassurance of a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and a seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty (although&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/2022-what-car-reliability-survey-large-suvs/n23405">Kia’s excellent reliability</a>&nbsp;record means you shouldn’t need it).

Add in the fact that the TCe 90 and TCe 100 Bi-Fuel engines are both great, and it matches the ride comfort of most small cars, and the Sandero would be well worth considering even if it cost the same as rivals. Except it doesn’t – it’s the UK’s cheapest new car. And if you pick our preferred Bi-Fuel engine, you can run it on LPG as well as petrol.

Just bear in mind that there are quieter and safer alternatives if you’re prepared to spend (quite a lot) more.

Whatever your choice, What Car?’s testers rate the cars highly; Porsche has an unusually high percentage of five and four-star cars.

Without exception, its sports cars are class leaders or among the class leaders, standing out for combining driving thrills with surprising luxury and comfort. You can have a V6-engined version in S or GTS trim, but our pick, the Macan T, has more than enough power from its 261bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine.

In addition, its handling really helps it to shine. It’s the most agile model in the range, because it’s carrying less weight than the larger-engined S and GTS versions. There’s also minimal body lean during cornering, and you get lots of feedback through the steering.

The only real disappointment is that you have to pay extra for safety kit that rivals include as standard.

Today, the resurgent Seat brand is selling better cars than at any time in its history.

In large part, that’s because it is one of the brands owned by the VW Group. Underneath, all of the cars it sells are strongly related to similar models sold by Volkswagen itself, or the likes of Skoda and even Audi. If you are buying a Leon, for example, the hardware will be similar to that of the Golf, Octavia and A3.

But while Seat makes the most of this tie-up to offer everything from city, small and family cars, including estates, through to a full range of SUVs, it also adds in its own slice of character, both with its distinctive styling approach and because its engineers generally tune the cars to deliver sportier handling.

While all of its cars are decent, it is the SUVs that stand out. The Arona and Ateca are among the class leaders and have enjoyed triumphs at the What Car? Awards.

We think the Leon is the better choice of the two, because it is sure to put a smile on your face on any twisty road, yet it’s very easy to live with the rest of the time.

It has a spacious interior, a big boot and impressive fuel economy for a non-hybrid petrol model – plus, it’s around £2000 cheaper than an equivalent Focus.

The sporty FR trim we prefer includes lots of kit, including a 10in touchscreen infotainment system, wireless phone charging and climate control with a separate zone for rear passengers.

Now, we’re big fans of electric cars, and we don’t doubt that the replacement will have a quicker 0-60mph time. What it won’t have, though, is a 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine that makes Ferraris and Porsches sound boring.

We think the R8’s engine is one of the best of all time, and the rest of the car is brilliant too, especially if you choose the more playful rear-wheel-drive version.

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Alpine (pronounced 'Al-peen') only makes one model, but if you’re in the market for a sports car, this French brand is worthy of your attention.

Its A110 is one of the best-handling cars on sale today. And while it’s not especially powerful, it’s still properly quick, thanks to its low weight.

The looks and character of today’s A110 were inspired by a legendary namesake that won the first ever World Rally Championship back in 1973. But the new car is undoubtedly a worthy successor.

That means it doesn’t need particularly stiff suspension, wide tyres or a massively powerful engine to perform well. And boy does it perform.

It can’t match the Cayman GTS for sheer pace around a track, but its incredible body control and beautiful handling balance make it intoxicatingly engaging on a country road. With a characterful engine and steering that chatters continuously about the road surface, the A110 is very tough to beat in this price range.

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the M8&nbsp;grand tourer, which costs more than £120,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has ten in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and XM, plus the electric iX3 and iX.

Compared with other family SUVs in this list, the Skoda Karoq’s main strength is its clever interior. Where many rivals allow you to simply split and fold their rear seats, the VarioFlex seats that come as standard in our chosen Karoq SEL also allow you to recline them and slide each one forwards and backwards independently. You can even remove them altogether if you need to carry masses of luggage, but we fitted nine carry-on cases in with them in place.

Beyond practicality, the Karoq is good to drive and great value for money. You can’t have it as a hybrid, though, like you can the family SUV topping our list.

It’s much more than just a pretty price tag, though; even this entry-level version has plenty of power to entertain, and its light, accurate steering gels with well-judged suspension for fantastic handling without being uncomfortable on a bumpy road. Volvo is now a true rival to the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, offering an alternative take on premium executive cars to a rapidly growing fanbase.

After a string of strong launches – notably with the Mk2 XC90 and XC60 SUVs – it struck gold in early 2018 when it launched its smallest SUV, the XC40. When our testers compared the car with its rivals, they concluded that it was the best launch of the previous 12 months, earning it our coveted overall Car of the Year Award.

The good news is that, like many car makers, Volvo now uses the same structure underneath most of its cars – so if they get it right on one model, it usually bodes well for the rest. That’s the case here, with Volvo’s subsequent saloon and estate launches complementing the SUVs and making for a generally extremely appealing line-up.

Among its strongest attributes is a smooth, compliant ride; it breezes over potholes and expansion joints that you would find jarring in its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x1/estate/review/n25006">BMW X1</a>&nbsp;rival. Indeed, it even betters the plush Range Rover Evoque in this regard.

On top of that, few rivals can top the XC40’s classy interior for build quality, and only the tallest of families will find any shortage of space, plus the boot can hold lots of holiday luggage. It’s packed with safety kit, too – arguably the most important virtue a family SUV can have.

The latest Fabia substantially undercuts most other small hatchbacks, with the obvious exception of the cheap-as-chips&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/dacia/sandero/hatchback/review/n55">Dacia Sandero</a>, but the Fabia is a much more sophisticated machine than that rival. It’s comfier to travel in, even matching the pricier&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/polo/hatchback/review/n83">Volkswagen Polo</a>&nbsp;on ride quality, and it offers appealing features such as centre air vents in the back (something of a rarity in the class).

The Fabia is impressively spacious, too, and – crucially – it scores much higher for safety than the Sandero; the independent experts at Euro NCAP awarded the Fabia five stars out of five, versus just two stars for the Sandero.

The Sport offers a lot of what we like about its full-size Range Rover sibling, but for a much lower price. It has a similarly well-finished interior with as much space in every dimension except head room; there’s still lots, though.

True, we think the Sport makes most sense in its plug-in hybrid form, but the much cheaper entry-level D300 diesel is also well worth considering – particularly if you’re a private buyer rather than a company car driver. Its 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine is smooth, quiet and punchy. Plus, you can still expect it to deliver more than 30mpg in real-world driving conditions.

Honda is a company that doesn’t like to follow the crowd. So, while it competes in most of the traditional sectors of the car market, in each case it does something a little bit different.

The Jazz, for example, might look like just another rival to Britain’s best-selling car, the Ford Fiesta, but it’s actually much more practical than its rivals, with a flexible boot and Tardis-like interior.

The bigger Civic is also a practical choice, but it’s mainly distinguished by having eye-catching, love-it-or-hate-it styling, despite competing in a sector of the market that’s usually more conservative than a blue rosette.

And while it may not seem so radical now, Honda’s large SUV, the CR-V, was one of the first to forego any pretence of being an off-roader and instead focus on on-road driving dynamics.

This success is partly down to longevity and the fact that there’s a Ford dealer around every corner. However, it’s also because Fords tend to offer good value and be among the best cars in their respective classes to drive.

The company’s huge range also helps; it offers everything from the small – but surprisingly practical – Ka+ to the large and lavishly equipped Edge SUV.

As befits the X7’s status as BMW’s biggest and most luxurious SUV, its interior is beautifully made, with sumptuous materials throughout. It also gets seven seats as standard (unlike its Range Rover rival), and adults will have enough space no matter which of these seats they occupy. They’ll also be impressed by how quiet and comfortable the X7 is.

M Sport trim comes loaded with kit, and the xDrive40i petrol engine is quiet at a cruise, yet punchy, with an appealing snarl when you’re in the mood for pressing on. The xDrive40d diesel is just as impressive, and is our pick for&nbsp;those who cover big miles.

The Superb punches well above its price, especially in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/estate-cars/n16998">estate</a>&nbsp;form. For starters, rear seat passengers get the sort of leg room that’s usually reserved for something chauffeur-driven. Its boot, too, is not only enormous but also packs useful touches such as bag hooks, a 12V charging port and even a rechargeable torch.

What’s more, the suspension soaks up urban potholes with ease yet provides a composed ride at speed, while our favoured 1.5-litre petrol engine is quiet enough that it won’t disturb slumbering passengers.

The Santa Fe does everything a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/large-suvs/n17006">large SUV</a>&nbsp;should. It’s spacious and practical, with seats for seven, and its hybrid tech gives it the potential for low running costs; even the non-plug-in version officially returns 44mpg while also delivering strong performance.

We reckon Premium trim makes more sense than range-topping Ultimate. It’s much cheaper, but you still get loads of standard kit, including adaptive cruise control, four heated leather seats and keyless entry. It also makes the Santa Fe significantly cheaper than the closely related&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/sorento/4x4/review/n18">Kia Sorento</a>, and that’s why we rate the former higher.

When it comes to whisky, cheese and wine, all of these things tend to get better over time. In the world of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/small-suvs/n17050">small SUVs</a>, the Volkswagen T-Roc has aged in a similarly positive way, thanks to a very effective mid-life update that addressed the car’s few initial shortcomings.

Drivers looking for fun might still be tempted by the more agile&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/puma/hatchback/review/n20838">Ford Puma</a>, but for everyone else, the T-Roc strikes an ideal balance between handling and comfort, being grippy and composed in corners yet having a well-cushioned ride. Combine the latter with low noise levels and the T-Roc is a better motorway companion than its rivals, too.

While those with a keen eye on running costs will do well to consider the hybrid&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/yaris-cross/estate/review/n23440">Toyota Yaris Cross</a>, the T-Roc’s 1.0-litre petrol engine balances plucky performance with respectable fuel economy. True, the engine needs to be revved hard to get going at a decent pace, but it doesn’t feel out of its depth in everyday driving.

So,&nbsp;several of its rivals stand out in one or two areas, but it’s the T-Roc’s comprehensive mix of abilities that makes it the most recommendable small SUV on sale.

Can you teach an old dog new tricks? The Honda Civic is proof that you can.

Despite the fact that the Civic name has been around for more than 50 years, this 11th-generation car is very much on trend. That’s because&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/hybrid-cars/n17013">hybrid</a>&nbsp;technology is standard, allowing this family hatchback to travel for short distances on electricity alone and be thrifty in its petrol consumption.

This tech really makes a difference, with the Civic achieving real-world economy of 50mpg-plus and giving the rival&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/corolla/hatchback/review/n18901">Toyota Corolla</a>&nbsp;1.8 Hybrid a close run for its money.

Throw in a great drive, stylish interior, generous equipment levels, space for four 6ft-tall occupants and a good-sized boot and there’s very little that counts against the Civic.

You’ll have seen that a few other sports cars have made it into our top 50 countdown, but there’s no doubt that the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS is the best of its ilk.

The 394bhp flat six in GTS models offers explosive performance when you want to have some fun, yet it’s docile and pulls easily from low revs when you’re just pootling along. In true&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/sports-cars/n24412">sports car</a>&nbsp;fashion, it comes with a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox to keep the engine stirred up in its sweet spot, although you can also pair this engine with a quick-acting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/automatic-gearboxes-everything-you-need-to-know/n17022">dual-clutch automatic</a>.

The Cayman’s handling is on a different level from that of most rival sports cars, too. True, the lighter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/alpine/a110/coupe/review/n185">Alpine A110</a>&nbsp;can feel more playful at regular road speeds, but the Cayman has far higher handling limits. Its steering is wonderfully precise and ideally weighted to give you plenty of confidence, and when you turn in to a bend, there’s virtually no body lean and an enormous amount of grip.

While it’s true that the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/coupes/n17019">coupé</a>&nbsp;market has changed significantly in recent years, evolving to include swoopy four-door saloons and SUVs with cut-down roofs, the traditional two-door BMW 4 Series has not only stood the test of time but still outshines the rest with its blend of sophistication, driver enjoyment and practicality.

All the while, the 4 Series’ distinctive (some would say divisive) exterior styling conceals an impeccable interior that’s filled with rich materials and some of the best tech in the business, including an exceptionally user-friendly&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-and-worst-car-infotainment-systems/n21268">infotainment system</a>. And if you can live without four doors, there’s enough space in the rear seats for average-sized adults to sit without feeling cramped, and a big enough boot to make the 4 Series perfectly practical for daily use.

Sometimes it’s the cars that stick to a tried and tested formula, rather than trying to break a mould or change the world, that make the most sense. The Kia Sportage is a classic case in point.

This is a conventional front-wheel-drive&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/family-suvs/n17116">family SUV</a>, much the same in concept as the class-defining original&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/qashqai/hatchback/review/n7">Nissan Qashqai</a>&nbsp;that was launched more than 15 years ago. The version we’re recommending here doesn’t even have any electrical assistance for its petrol engine, and you have to change gear yourself. But here’s the thing: if you’re not yet ready to buy an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric car</a>, you’re often best off keeping things simple.

Why? Well, for one thing, the regular 1.6-litre petrol version of the Sportage is £1700 cheaper than the mild hybrid equivalent, £3750 cheaper than the full&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/hybrid-cars/n17013">hybrid</a>&nbsp;and undercuts the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/plug-in-hybrid-cars/n22743">plug-in hybrid</a>&nbsp;(PHEV) version by a whopping £8900. Unless you’re a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-company-cars/n22605">company car</a>&nbsp;driver and can take advantage of benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax breaks, you’ll need to do a ridiculous number of miles before any of the hybrid versions would break even.

The Sportage impresses in other ways, thanks to its peaceful cruising manners and largely comfortable ride. It’s no hot hatch through corners, but it’s more agile than you’d probably expect; there’s some body lean, of course (it’s a fairly tall SUV), but it has plenty of grip and its steering gives you the confidence to tackle fast country roads just as easily as narrow urban back streets.

But why is the Sportage a better buy than similar-priced family SUVs from other brands? Cars like the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/tucson/4x4/review/n103">Hyundai Tucson</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/karoq/estate/review/n118">Skoda Karoq</a>? Well, both of those alternatives are in our top 50 and have many virtues, but the Sportage is just that bit more rounded. It has roomier rear seats than the Karoq and a more practical boot, while it’s better to drive than the Tucson (a car with which it shares its basic underpinnings).

For most buyers, 3 trim is worth the extra and adds a layer of luxury to the Sportage’s many talents, with creature comforts ranging from keyless entry to heated seats (front and rear) and adaptive cruise control.
