Looking for a plush large SUV? Surely the Audi Q5 is already on your shortlist. And so it should be, because it's superb to drive and relatively cheap to run, yet also comes with one of the best interiors you'll find in any new car.

The I-Pace is Jaguar's first electric car, and a rival for the Audi E-tron and Tesla's Model S luxury saloon. It's powered by two electric motors producing a combined 395bhp, and its 90kWh battery pack allows for an official driving range of 298 miles. When we put the I-Pace through our Real Range test, though – which shows what you're likely to acheive in real-world conditions – that number fell to a still respectable 253 miles.

If you regularly need to go off-road, then the Renegade is a suitable companion, with a spacious interior and an economical range of diesel engines.

Hyundai Kona Electric
The Kona Electric covered a massive 259 miles between charges on our Real Range test. That huge range is key to its appeal, then, but it also impresses with surprisingly rapid acceleration and a great driving position which means you won't feel uncomfortable after a long journey. A choppy ride and a small boot stop it from being among the best in its class, but the Kona Electric should be on any potential EV-owner's shortlist.

The Compass has impressive off-road credentials, so if you plan on regularly heading away from the beaten track it could be a capable companion. It's also reasonably spacious inside.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
