The Polo is our favourite small car, because it offers so much that you'd normally expect to find on larger, more expensive models. As well as a high-quality interior that's also spacious, the Polo is quiet on the move, has a supple ride and is available with a peppy range of engines. It's a lot of car in a small package.

6. Nissan Qashqai
You can't go far wrong with a Qashqai; indeed, it's consistently one of the best-selling family SUVs in the UK. There's a range of efficient engines on offer, and the ride is comfortable if you stick with smaller wheels. You miss out on some of our recommended safety kit on lower trims, though.
