Mitsubishi i MiEV
Price 22,500 (est)
Range 100 miles
You can put a deposit down on an i MiEV right now (it goes on sale in November), but Mitsubishi was cagey about the price at the time of writing. All we know is that it'll be between 20k and 25k.
Not cheap, then, but it is the most practical car here, having a good-sized boot and fair rear legroom. It's also efficient, using less electricity per mile than the other six cars, which means it also has a lower carbon impact. It only takes six hours to fully charge, too.
The cheaper C1 Ev'ie will also hold four people, but their weight seriously blunts its performance. The Mitsubishi's stronger motor handles a full load better. In fact, the i MiEV was second to only the Tesla in our performance tests, hitting 30mph in just 4.8seconds.
Thanks to its impressive urge and relatively high top speed, there's no need to worry about taking it out of town. It'll cruise well at 70mph, but holding it there for long does hit its range hard.
