Hyundai Veloster Turbo
* Most upbeat Detroit motor show in years * 10 Detroit cars that caught our eye * NSX undoubted star of the show...
The Hyundai Veloster has attracted plenty of headlines for its unusual door layout and oddball styling, but we have reservations about its ride, steering and modest performance.
The Veloster Turbo could address at least some of those concerns.
The new performance variant gets a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine producing around 201bhp in UK trim, and Hyundai is also promising suspension and steering tweaks that'll sharpen the handling (they're unlikely to improve the ride, mind you). It should give the Veloster the grunt required to take on more potent Minis, Vauxhall Astra GTCs and VW Sciroccos and lift it beyond mild three-door Renault Meganes.
The Turbo is certainly no shrinking violet, either; the hot Veloster's curio looks are likely to split more opinions than ever, thanks to spoilers, beefier bumpers and wheelarch extensions.
