Hyundai Sonato

Hyundai will replace its Sonata in the UK later this year and this hybrid version of the car gives us a good indication of what to expect.

The hybrid Sonata has a combined output of 206bhp from a 167bhp 2.4-litre petrol engine and an electric motor.

Like the Elantra hybrid that was shown at the Frankfurt motor show last year, the Sonata hybrid uses the latest lithium polymer batteries, which Hyundai says are stronger, lighter, cheaper and more reliable than current lithium ion versions.

'The Sonata is a great example of what our Blue Drive strategy is doing for consumers,' said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America president and CEO.

'Think about it - more horsepower than any of our V6 competitors, better economy than any competitive 4-cylinder model. We're not fans of compromising at Hyundai, and the Sonata really demonstrates this aspect of our approach.'

A hybrid isn't ruled out for the UK, but a diesel engine is an easier option for Hyundai in the short term.
