Frankfurt motor show 2019: all the star cars
Volkswagen's all-electric hatchback, Hyundai's third-generation city car and an all-new Land Rover Defender. These are the star cars on display at the Frankfurt motor show...
Cupra Tavascan
Cupra is the new performance sister brand of Seat. Until now, it has shown off the Cupra Ateca sports SUV and Formentor plug-in hybrid sports SUV. Now, however, it's going fully electric, presenting a new SUV-coupé called the Tavascan. It's due to go on sale towards the middle of next year, and is powered by two electric motors providing a driving range of up to 279 miles. Prices should start from around £60,000.

Hyundai i10
The Hyundai i10 used to be our favourite city car, but it was de-throned by the excellent Kia Picanto two years ago. Now, though, Hyundai is back with the second generation of its smallest model. As well as a bold new look, there's a new tech-heavy interior featuring an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system, plus a wider array of safety kit. Prices are expected to start from around £9500 when sales begin early next year.

Hyundai 45
While not previewing any particular car, the 45 concept from Hyundai does show how the Korean firm will style its future electric cars. With styling inspired by the clean lines of 1920s aircraft – as well as Hyundai’s own Coupé concept car of 1974 – the 45 features innovations including a charge indicator on the bottom of its doors, so drivers can immediately see how far they can travel and panels of LED lights which produce colourful shapes when the car is started.
Land Rover Defender
The new Land Rover Defender is arguably Frankfurt's biggest star, such is the buzz surrounding its unveiling. And it's justified, because Land Rover's off-road icon has been reborn as an SUV which should be as comfortable on the motorway as it is in the rough stuff. There'll be a variety of versions, including models with different wheelbases as well as versions with up to eight seats, and prices should start from around £40,000 when sales get under way early next year.
