Chevrolet Camaro driven
* Head-turning looks and neck-straining pace * Left-hand-drive only * On sale spring 2011, from £33,000...
If you thought that Chevrolet's jaw-dropping Camaro was merely an American dream, its now a reality for British drivers. Although its been on sale in the US since 2009, youll be able to buy one (left-hand-drive only) in the UK, with a full manufacturer warranty, from spring next year.
Limited supply
Initially, there are plans to bring over only 100 cars a mix of coupes and convertibles so the Camaro will remain an unfamiliar sight. However, its more than just the rarity factor thatll cause heads to turn the Camaro's retro looks and supersize proportions will do that anyway.
The Camaro has an official 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds, powered there by its 6.2-litre V8 engine, which emits a soundtrack that ranges from a hearty rumble to a throaty roar.
Living with it
The manual gearshift isn't the slickest, but an automatic gearbox will also be available. Initial impressions are that the Camaro's firm suspension will keep things tidy through corners, but theres the added reassurance of a stability control if things start to get out of shape.
Inside, the Camaro has a similar blend of retro and modern styling cues to the outside. Its not a match for its German rivals for quality, but everything feels solid and looks good. Things are appealingly cosy up front, but theres decent space for two in the back.
Standard kit will include leather upholstery, electric seat adjustment, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors and a high-spec stereo system.
How much?
Prices have yet to be confirmed, but we expect the Camaro will be comparatively competitive considering the power on offer. We expect it to cost around £33,000.
