The Cupra Tavascan is proof that you need more than just racy looks and a sporty driving experience to stand out in the world of electric SUVs. But the introduction of a new trim and a smaller battery could broaden its appeal more than ever.

The big news is the arrival of a new entry-level ‘Origin’ trim coupled with a smaller 58kWh (usable capacity) battery feeding a motor which develops 187bhp. The battery will accept a maximum charging rate of 135kW, and the car can cover up to 273 miles on a charge, under official figures.

So equipped, the new version sees the Tavascan’s starting price reduced by £1700 to £39,995, undercutting the cheapest versions of the Skoda Enyaq Coupé and Volkswagen ID 5 as a result.

Despite being the base model, standard kit remains generous, with bold 19in alloy wheels, heated seats, a 10.25in digital instrument display and a 15in infotainment touchscreen dominating the dash.

For drivers needing longer range between charges, the existing 77kWh battery remains available with 282bhp, as does the punchy 335bhp dual-motor setup in range-topping VZ models. The expanded range now spans five distinct trims: Origin, V1, V2, VZ and VZ Extreme.

It’s not just about lower prices, either. Cupra has packed in extra tech features across the board. Keyless smartphone access and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) tech- – which allows you to charge mains devices from the car’s own battery – both feature from V1 trim upwards, while higher-spec models gain an upgraded Sennheiser audio system, plus launch control for maximum off-the-line acceleration.

Adding even more value to the range, existing 77kWh models receive price cuts of up to £1600, which sees the V1 reduced to £45,750.

The new Cupra Tavascan Origin is available to order now.
