What should I look for in a used MG MG5 estate?

Unlike many competitor EVs, MG provides the full array of cables (including a slow-charge, three-pin lead) with every MG5. Make sure they are all supplied with the car because they can be quite expensive to replace.

Other than that, you should do all the regular used car checks, such as seeing whether there's any damage to the bumpers and bodywork, examining the alloy wheels for extensive kerb damage, and making sure the interior hasn't been trashed by family life.

Is a used MG MG5 estate reliable?

The MG5 performed well in the 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey finishing in eighth place out of 18 cars in the electric car class with a good overall score of 92%.

Unfortunately, MG finished at the bottom of all the manufacturers featured in 34th place out of 34, with a bad overall score of 76.9%. This was mostly due to the poor performance of the MG5's sibling, the MG4, in the electric car class, which finished in last place with an overall score of just 63.3%.

Used MG5 reliability: the owners' view

As part of our annual Reliability Survey, What Car? readers said the MG5 has been mostly reliable, though a few issues were raised.

Some owners reported concerns with electrical faults, particularly involving the infotainment system and dashboard displays. These problems, while not always critical, were frustrating for several drivers and required attention from MG dealerships.

Feedback on dealer service was mixed. While some readers praised the prompt and courteous service from MG dealerships, others experienced delays in sourcing parts, which extended repair times. One owner mentioned that their car was off the road for an extended period due to a lack of available components. There were also comments about the cost of repairs being higher than expected for certain fixes, such as electrical work.

Despite these issues, many drivers found their MG5 to be a dependable and affordable choice, though they felt the dealership experience could be more consistent in addressing faults.
