The entry-level Macan and the Macan T are powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 261bhp. The T can officially do 0-60mph slightly quicker (5.8sec vs 6.0sec), but that's purely because it has a launch control function (part of the Sports Chrono Pack) fitted as standard. On the move, both build speed at the same rate and are quick enough for most buyers.

Porsche is best known as the quintessential sports car maker, but its line-up is increasingly diverse, interesting and successful, from its SUV family to the Panamera hatchback and shooting brake and, in time, a planned family of electric vehicles.

You get a fair bit for your money with the Macan, including 19in alloy wheels, a powered tailgate, cruise control, three-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, and a 10-speaker 150-watt stereo. We'd upgrade the the more generously equipped Macan T, though.

We reckon the Macan T is the pick of the line-up. Like the S it comes with 20in alloys, but adds the desirable Sports Chrono Package, a smaller-diameter heated steering wheel, more figure-hugging front seats and a bespoke suspension setup for sharper handling.

The Macan S model has a 375bhp 2.9-litre V6 engine, and is well worth considering is rapid acceleration and a tuneful engine note are high on your shortlist. 

Like the standard Macan, the S includes a powered tailgate, cruise control, part-Alcantara seats (with eight-way electric adjustment on the driver’s side), three-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, and a 10-speaker 150-watt stereo. It does, however, get 20in alloy wheels rather than 19s.

With "just" 335bhp, is the entry-level model fast enough? Well, the answer depends on your expectations. It doesn’t punch you in the gut like the Turbo flagship, but with instant torque, it feels sprightly in everyday driving, and there’s enough low-down shove to play with the car’s balance on a country road.

With 402bhp the Macan 4 has an official 0-62mph time of 5.2 seconds. The electric range is an impressive 381 miles.

300kW

Standard features include 20in alloy wheels, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, a powered tailgate and a heat pump. You have to pay extra for keyless entry, privacy glass, a heated steering wheel, full leather seats and adaptive cruise control.

With 510bhp and an official 0-62mph of 4.1 seconds, we imagine many of even the keenest owners being perfectly happy with a 4S. However, once you've added a few choice options you're not far away on price from the range-topping Turbo.

The 4S gets 20in alloy wheels, heated eight-way electric front seats, a powered tailgate, steel suspension, LED headlights, two-zone climate control, wireless phone-charging and a heat pump.

The GTS is the fastest version of the Macan. It has the same basic engine as the S but with more power, and can do 0-60mph in just 4.1 seconds if you add the optional Sports Chrono Pack. It's a lovely thing, even is cheaper versions offer better value.

The price jump between the S and GTS looks a lot more palatable when you consider all of the desirable extras that you get. These include upgraded LED headlights, a sports exhaust and air suspension. Visual changes include black side mouldings, a black grille, black bumper detailing front and rear, black 21in alloy wheels and a roof spoiler.

With 630bhp the Turbo is monstrously fast, with an official 0-62mph time of 3.3 seconds. Range is down on the 4, at 367 miles.

The Turbo comes with 20in alloy wheels, 18-way adaptive sport seats, model designation in Turbonite grey, adaptive air suspension, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), power steering plus, a carbon interior package, roof lining in Race Tex and a BOSE surround-sound system.
