The C's entry-level 1.5-litre petrol engine produces 154bhp and delivers 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds (in the three-door version). No matter the situation, it feels very punchy, making it our favourite option.

Hatchback

Talk about taking an idea and running with it. The big-selling Mini hatchback is still at the core of the firm’s range, but its cute styling and relatively compact dimensions have been spun off into an estate (the Clubman) and an SUV (the Countryman), as well as a convertible.

Despite its small size, the Mini is a firmly premium product, and the three-door hatchback counts the Audi A1 and Volkswagen Polo among its key rivals.

The fact that Mini is owned by BMW brings some big advantages –&nbsp;not least the fact that its infotainment system is based on BMW’s industry-leading iDrive.

Your entry-level trim covers the basics, such as climate control, cruise control, 16in alloy wheels and rear-view camera. We'd stick with this trim and opt for the Level 1 equipment pack – for creature comforts such as heated seats – rather than spending the money on a higher trim.

Go for the entry-level Cooper E and you'll get a single 181bhp electric motor driving the front wheels. That gives surprisingly nippy acceleration (0-62mph in 7.3sec), but the official range of 190 miles is a bit disappointing.

135kW

Classic is the entry-level trim and offers relatively little in the way of personalisation options. We'd recommend adding the Level 1 equipment package.

The S gets a 201bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine that's good for 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds (in the three-door model). It's effortlessly strong, but not as tuneful or exciting as engines found in other hot hatches.

The entry-level trim includes climate control, cruise control, 16in alloy wheels and a rear-view camera. It's worth adding the Level 1 equipment pack to get heated seats and other luxuries rather than upgrading to a pricier trim.

Sport is the priciest Mini Cooper trim, and gets you the sportiest look, as well as adaptive suspension. We think it's too expensive to recommend though.

If you can afford it, this Cooper SE version is worth the extra. It has a longer range than the entry-level Cooper E (officially up to 250 miles) and offers slightly faster acceleration.

160kW

Classic is the entry-level trim and offers relatively little in the way of personalisation options. You do get a Level 1 equipment package upgrade as standard with the Cooper SE, though.

The price of range-topping Sport trim is steep, but in return you get the sportiest looking Cooper, plus adaptive suspension, so you can stiffen or soften the ride at will. We don't think it's worth the extra cost, though.
