So, while many car makers have moved to smaller turbocharged engines, Mazda instead offers larger motors that are still efficient. For example, the entry-level petrol option in the Mazda 3 is a 2.0-litre unit –&nbsp;far larger than what you’ll find in most rivals – but it remains very clean.

Even this entry-level trim is very well equipped, and includes cruise control, climate control and Mazda’s brilliant 8.0in infotainment system. The higher, more expensive trim levels only really bring some cosmetic tweaks – so this is the trim to go for.

Exclusive-Line

Brings 16in alloys, heated door mirrors and a reversing camera as well as some styling tweaks on top of what Centre-Line offers.

Homura

The main reason for opting for this range-topping trim is that it’s the only version you can have with the range-topping Skyactiv G 115 engine, which is the best performer in the lineup. However, it pushes the price up very high, at which point many other rivals are better purchases. You also get a heated steering wheel.
