We’re yet to try this mild-hybrid variant of the entry-level 1.5 TSI 150. Even so, if you like the look of the Cupra Leon but efficiency is more important than sportiness, this might just be the one. 

1.5 TSI 150

Estate

The sportiest Seats have long used the&nbsp;Cupra name, but it's now been turned into a standalone sub-brand, in much the same way as Fiat's sportiest models are badged as Abarths.

Like Abarth, some of Cupra's models including the Ateca and Leon are extensively reworked Seats, but models such as the Born and Formentor are exclusive to Cupra.

Whilst Cupras are closely related to equivalent models from Seat and Volkswagen, they are generally tuned to provide a more engaging driving experience.

Despite being the entry-level trim, V1 comes with plenty of standard equipment. That list includes 18in alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, automatic LED headlights and wireless phone-charging.

This trim level adds a few extra niceties, including 19in alloy wheels, adaptive suspension and really nice bucket seats.

Compared with the V2 trim, this V3 trim gets its own 19in wheels and adds some bespoke styling elements.

Unlike most hot hatchbacks, the Leon’s trick up its sleeve is that you can get it with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) engines like this one. We’ve yet to try it, but we suspect its electric motor will make it feel quick off the line, while the low CO2 emissions and 60 mile electric-only range will make it really efficient.

Like the 204, this plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Cupra Leon can travel up to 60 miles on electricity-alone and will be the choice for company car drivers. While we suspect that the e-Hybrid 204 won’t feel slow, this one should feel especially quick.

1.5 eHybrid 272

If you want the most powerful engines and a sporty Cupra Leon, this is the trim level to go for. Along with those engines, VZ1 adds even nicer bucket seats and matrix LED headlights. This is the trim level that we’d go for.

Our favourite version of the Cupra Leon hatchback is also the most powerful one. This 296bhp engine makes the Leon feel mighty fast and really lives up to the hot hatch title.

This mid-spec VZ trim gets all the same kit as the VZ1 but also adds its own styling tweaks, inside and out. It’s probably not worth the extra you’ll pay.

Top-spec VZ3 is the one to go for if you want all the bells and whistles. Not only does this tick every box on the equipment list, it also comes with the choice of bigger Brembo or Akebono brakes.
