With 148bhp, the entry-level engine can sprint from 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds. You’ll have to work it quite hard to get the best performance from it, but it’s more than good enough for everyday driving. It’s also the most efficient engine in the range.

1.5 EcoTSI

The sportiest Seats have long used the&nbsp;Cupra name, but it's now been turned into a standalone sub-brand, in much the same way as Fiat's sportiest models are badged as Abarths.

Like Abarth, some of Cupra's models including the Ateca and Leon are extensively reworked Seats, but models such as the Born and Formentor are exclusive to Cupra.

Whilst Cupras are closely related to equivalent models from Seat and Volkswagen, they are generally tuned to provide a more engaging driving experience.

Entry-level V1 trim comes with all the equipment you could ever need, including 19in alloys, cruise control, dual-zone climate control and keyless entry. Still, it’s hard to justify the premium you’ll pay against the regular Seat Ateca.

1.5 EcoTSI V1 5dr DSG

On top of the equipment you get with V1 trim, upgrading to V2 gives you electric front bucket seats that are heated, a rear-view camera and an electric tailgate.

With more power, this mid-spec engine is arguably the best of the normal options, giving you a good mix of performance and efficiency. That said, we’d still just stick to the most powerful engine or the regular Seat Ateca.

The most powerful engine is the one that we’d go for, because it best fits the sporty ethos of the Cupra Ateca. With 296bhp, it makes the Ateca seriously quick, cutting the 0-62mph sprint to 4.9 seconds.

2.0 TSI

This is the trim that we’d go for, because it gives you the most powerful engine and best suits the Cupra Ateca. This trim adds highlights including the excellent sport bucket seats, adaptive suspension and Cupra driving modes.

2.0 TSI VZ1 5dr DSG 4Drive

Much like V2 trim, upgrading to VZ2 adds electric memory seats and an electric tailgate. It also adds some additional safety kit, including better lane-keeping assistance, upgraded automatic emergency braking (AEB) and adaptive cruise control.

The Cupra’s top trim is also its sportiest, adding the supersports steering wheel (with additional controls), 19in copper alloys and performance Brembo brakes.
