With this entry-level motor, the i5 doesn't give you the instant hit of power away from the lights that you might expect from an electric car. However, it's still far from slow, and pulls much harder than the rival Mercedes EQE 300 when you ask for a quick burst of acceleration on the move. It can't travel as far between charges as the EQE, though.

Saloon

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the M8&nbsp;grand tourer, which costs more than £120,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has ten in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and XM, plus the electric iX3 and iX.

All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Sport Edition trim is the cheapest available, and gets you 19in alloy wheels, faux-leather upholstery, climate control, adaptive LED headlights, heated front seats and a heat pump. Given that the i5 is already very expensive, this is the trim we'd go for.

M Sport trim is the one to go for if you want sporty styling. If you're not too bothered about that, we'd save some money and go for cheaper Sport Edition trim. Either way, we'd recommend adding the optional Comfort Pack.

Upgrading from M Sport to M Sport Pro trim brings stylistic changes, such as black exterior highlights, a subtle rear spoiler, an illuminated front grille, red brake callipers and 20in wheels. Whether these things are worth the extra outlay is a matter of personal taste.

While the eDrive40 version of the i5 has a single electric motor and rear-wheel drive, this flagship M60 model features two motors (one on each axle) for four-wheel drive. What's more, the M60 produces an extra 258bhp (for a total of 593bhp), so can blast from 0-62mph in a sports car-rivalling 3.8sec. Still, as exciting as this is, we reckon the eDrive40 is still fast enough to keep most people happy.

In addition to its extra performance, the M60 model comes with adaptive suspension, metallic paint, four-zone climate control, memory settings for the front seats, and bespoke M detailing inside and out.
