Estate

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the M8&nbsp;grand tourer, which costs more than £120,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has ten in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and XM, plus the electric iX3 and iX.

All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

3 SERIES

Entry-level Sport comes with all you’d need including 17in alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated front seats, three-zone air conditioning, cruise control and BMW’s excellent iDrive infotainment system.

This trim level adds some sporty styling and a stiffer ‘M Sport’ suspension setup. We recommend going for this and adding the optional M Sport Pro pack because the adaptive suspension it adds makes it the most comfortable version of the 3 Series.

The M340i petrol is the fastest standard 3 Series Touring until the M3 Touring arrives. It has 369bhp and chops the 0-62mph sprint down to a blistering 4.6sec.

This is the only way to get the most potent 40i petrol engine. It also adds the M Sport Pro pack as standard.
