Review

The Honda Civic is good to drive, has a big boot and comes with lots of standard kit. It still can’t match the Volkswagen Golf in terms of performance, handling or refinement, but the Civic offers a generously sized boot, good selection of technology and competitive servicing packages. It’s a shame the infotainment system is so poor, though.

Trim: SE

Worth considering if you want to keep things relatively basic. Over and above entry-level S trim, SE gets you an AM/FM/DAB radio, air conditioning, alloy wheels and front and rear parking sensors.

Engine: 1.6 i-DTEC

It’s not the most fuel-efficient engine in its class, according to official figures, but it’s not too far off and came out top in the family car sector in our True MPG real-world economy tests. Refinement isn’t great, with a bit too much din when you put your foot down, and the power band is rather narrow.
