The iX3’s electric powertrain feels strong rather than thrilling, accelerating the iX3 from 0-62mph in around 6.8sec in near silence (unless you have the space-age sounding IconicSounds system that comes with M Sport Pro trim). It’s more than fast enough for almost any situation you can throw at it and still offers an official range of 285 miles, more than any rival.

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the M8&nbsp;grand tourer, which costs more than £120,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has ten in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and XM, plus the electric iX3 and iX.

All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

This builds on the xLine and brings a sportier exterior to the X3 with a different alloy wheel design and body-coloured trim.

The BMW iX3 struggles to compete when it comes to charging speeds and range, but it makes up for that by being good to drive, practical and smart inside with a fab infotainment system. It’s still a fine buy if you’re looking for a big electric SUV.
