Review

The BMW 5 Series is a brilliant, classy and wonderfully refined luxury saloon, with surprisingly low running costs if you go for the 530e plug-in hybrid or 520d mild hybrid. It's a more complete package than its chief rivals, such as the Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class and Jaguar XF.

Trim: M Sport

Hugely popular thanks to its sportier looks – inside and out – and bigger alloy wheels. However, you also get stiffer suspension that does nothing for ride comfort. SE trim is better value and is where our money would go.

Engine: 540i xDrive

This six-cylinder petrol is smooth, fast (0-62mph takes 4.7sec) and really lovely if you don't mind paying for petrol. In the real-world the 530d diesel feels just as quick and is much more economical. Comes with four-wheel drive as standard.
