Review

The BMW 5 Series is a brilliant, classy and wonderfully refined luxury saloon, with surprisingly low running costs if you go for the 530e plug-in hybrid or 520d mild hybrid. It's a more complete package than its chief rivals, such as the Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class and Jaguar XF.

Trim: SE

This entry-level trim comes with all the essentials and quite a lot more on top. You get part-electrically operated and heated front seats, leather trim, a 12.3in infotainment screen, digital instruments, concierge service, sat-nav, Apple CarPlay, ambient interior lighting, dual-zone climate control, LED headlights, an automatically dimming rear-view mirror, front and rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, and 17in alloy wheels (18in with the more powerful engines). You only really need to fork out for adjustable lumbar support, adjustable dampers (Variable Damping Control) and split-folding rear seats (Through Loading System).

Engine: 530e

A four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motor combined, but the 530e can be driven for up to 36 miles (WLTP) on electricity alone (we managed 18.1 miles in our test). This silent progress befits the 5’s luxury remit very well, and when the battery is empty, the petrol engine remains suitably quiet. With emissions of just 32g/km of CO2, it’s a company driver’s dream but you'll need to keep the battery charged to avoid petrol consumption dropping to less than the average of 33.1mpg we saw during a mix of driving. Anyone doing high mileages mainly on motorways may well find the 520d much more economical.
